Your opinion with B&W portrait

We were just playing around outside and I obtained this shot that I love. I am just starting to play with B&W. Please let me know how you like this, and if it needs improvement what you would do.

I use Canon 60D with the nifty-fifty. I am still getting to know my camera, but we are developing a lovely relationship.

My concern with this shot is the hot spot on Maxwell's nose. I haven't done much with this in PSE, but I was considering toning down that hot spot. (I just haven't figured out how to do that yet.)

f/3.5, 1/640 sec, ISO-100, 50mm

Do you use an action to convert to b/w because in all honesty this is more a grey/grey conversion. There is no real black or white areas.

Would you mind posting the original in colour and if you don't mind I can show you what a "true" b/w conversation might look like.

I do like that you don't have him centered, he is making great eye contact with the camera/you. He looks happy.

I'm also not really seeing a "hot spot" on his nose, I am seeing more light but it's not blown. Some dodging and burning could even out the skin tone for you.

Thank you so much for your input! I see what you are saying about the B&W conversion.

I don't have any actions yet for B&W. I just did the B&W thing in PSE10.

Here is the color version.

Here is what I came up with.

First I did a little colour correction and evened out his skin tone.
First I did a little colour correction and evened ...

Side by Side (original and My play)
Side by Side (original and My play)...

then I converted to b/w
then I converted to b/w...

I like the contrast in the helped conversion. There are alot of free actions on Coffeeshop.com that can give you great results esp if you are just starting out. Soon you will understand these actions and you can do it yourself and add you on flair

Thank you for you help! I can see now that I needed more contrast.

I will be posting some more shots soon that I would love to have your opinion on.

Thank you! He gets a lot of attention for that hair... and has the personality to go with it!

MWAC, when you say this "First I did a little colour correction and evened out his skin tone", is that two separate actions or is the color correction what evened out his skin tone?

Sorry if I'm a little dense about this but I'm here to learn and I've decided that this forum here is the one that is going to give me the most advice on the areas that interest me. Thanks for putting up with me!

two different steps, I don't use actions. Which programs do you use? I can give you the steps if you like, I use CS5 and LR3. Most of my post work is done in CS5 and can be easliy translated for Elements.

I'm sorry, I don't have either of those. I use GIMP, am pretty good with it and can usually figure out the corresponding steps. That said though, making adjustments to the 'people' pictures isn't my strong area. Thanks for your patience.

I'll post the steps I use after the kids are in bed and hubby leaves for his weekly hockey game night. They really aren't that hard, it's more about knowing to watch the CYMK numbers and how they relate to skin tones. :) Ya math!
