Looking for some C&C on this photo, Specifically do the rocks have enough detail and light on them , I am not looking to make them bright. How is the composition? Is the sky to bright to dark etc.
For all the landscape photographers out there how can I make this Better?
Thanks for your help.

 I like it Emm5. I suppose you could lighten the shadow areas up a bit for more detail in them, but the sky is exposed perfectly IMHO! Nice composition that leads the viewer's eye into the picture nicely.

I really like the mood - gentle, but stark. The composition seems nicely balanced, with interest in the repeating diagonal lines of the mountains. Even on my 11" chromebook, the exposure looks good. Beautifully done!

I agree with the other comments about the mood. Just for your comparison though, here is a version that I lightened the rock shadows by adjusting the Shadows slider in Adobe Camera Raw to +40. It not only defined the individual rocks but it also added some definition to the mountains at left.

Revised version

Thank you for your input, when I look at it on my Mac it's much lighter than in this site. I like your version.

I know you can't go back and re-shoot; but here is my take on this very nice photo. I don't particularly care for the horizon to be right in the middle. Since cropping the bottom or the top to move the horizon would take a lot of detail and drama out of the composition, I would have tried to get as low as possible to those rocks. (I was not there and don't know if this is even possible). That perspective would have given you the rocks and the sky and maybe put the horizon higher in the frame which would be more pleasing to my eye.

But that would reduce the amount of water, the rocks would be covering more of it. The water adds a lot of mood to the total scene.

I like it the way it is.

I find the image perfect, it shows me a typical dreary Alaskan day.

Emm5, when Mikey likes it pay attention. He is the master landscape photographer on this site.

I was there last September and it was like that every day for the ten days I was there, hardly took any photos. My daughter, who lives there, said the sun came out the day after I left. I hope it is better this year, I am going for ten days through Thanksgiving week.

Get an optech rain shield for your camera and lens(very cheap) so that you can still take pictures while it's raining!
