I owned that lens. Bought it for $500 new. It takes great portraits as well as macros. Example below.

Its a lens in my bag right now. I'll echo Bob for its portrait uses. It also works well as a macro length lens. It what I use for almost all of my flower photos.

Great lens, I use this lens for all kinds of shooting. Its a good macro lens and its a good landscape lens. If the price is right you should get it.
