Lens Strap

I just got my Sigma 150-600 C this weekend. It comes with a shoulder strap that can be attached to the lens itself. I don't see any reason I want to put this on. In fact I think it can be in the way and dangerous, especially when mounted to a tripod. Is there anyone who has experience with a lens strap and find it useful?

I use that strap often to carry my 150-600mm Sport model when not mounted to a camera, it comes in handy. I also use the strap for my Sigma 120-300mm F2.8 which is about the same size and weight. They don't really get in the way at al when using a tripod with them.

looped over the tripod, it may prevent the lens from hitting the ground should something fail.

Thanks all for info. Good reasons so strap will go on lens.

Wife loves cooking no need to tie to stove.

I never use straps to carry any lenses or cameras - too dangerous. I do use tether straps after the camera/lens is mounted on a bodypod/monopod/tripod for insurance.

I moved to an Op/Tech shoulder strap and I find it comfortable, secure, adjustable and easy on & off.
When I use a strap it is the only one I now use.
I have a Sigma150-500mm and have one of those straps you mentioned...would only use that strap on lense when not attached to the camera..but really never see the need to do that.

If I go in the field ( with a long lens), I usually switch my camera strap from camera to lens, as to not put too much a burden on the cameras lens mount, but that's only when I'm out for quite a while and having to go long distances. For short strolls I keep the straps on the camera, but hold the lens by hand to keep the weight off the lens mount.
