Textures, lighting, repetitive pattern, contrast between the middle and the outer - perfect!

Pine bark and heartwood? Is that bark burned at the bottom of hole?

No, it's just in shadow. In addition, a bit of burning and dodging darkened it a bit.

Thanks for taking a look and you interest.

Beautiful celebration of tone, texture, and pattern.
It looks to me like edge advancement of cambium over a region stripped of bark some time ago.

you knew I'd love this one, didn't you, my friend?

Dave, I sort of felt you be very appreciative of this image. Sunlight filtered through pine branches, tonal and textural contrasts, and careful exposure to make the most of all of that.

Thanks for the nice compliment.

It looked like hardwood to me, too.
What kind of pine is it?

I tried to find an answer for you, as I am not a "plantologist". I enjoy photographing them, but I'm not that intimately acquainted with the various pine trees that grow in the area.

The photograph was taken just a bit north and east of Payson, Az. Here is a link to a paper in which is discussed the various types of pine that grow in that area.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help on this question.

Thanks checking out the photograph.

Thanks Bob. I think it's alligator juniper.
