This looks like an early instar Giant Swallowtail caterpillar. Worth protecting. http://fireflyforest.net/firefly/2007/09/02/giant-swallowtail-butterflies-and-caterpillars

ok they can eat all they want :) i found a whole herd of them on some brush,but might be a different kind.tom

These are definitely a different caterpillar. I do not recognize them, so if they are on a desirable, or valuable, or "keeper" plant, I would consider them pests.

Nice shot, by the way! Notice the shallow DOF.
