male black widow

Here's a male black widow that was taken early last summer. I use a Canon 40D, with 100mm macro.

f/8 1/60 sec ISO 800

Because I"m such a novice, I use the blind hog method - and after countless tries I occasionally pick up an 'acorn'.

Male Black Widows are much smaller than female Black Widows, who earn their name by eating the male after copulation.

Yes. They're really quite different in size - and color. Here's a pic of the male above, along with the female he was 'courting'.

Do you have that mama confined or in a safe place? There will be a lot of babies coming out of that sack.
