for normal wiping , use a lens cloth....

Right, and 100 wipes go a long way. You can use them for other little cleaning jobs, too. They're like those packs of cleaners you get with something that must adhere to a surface.

I use ROR and lens tissue when the wipes do not work. I got this tip from a fellow hogger. Gary Available from the usual online services. Gary http://www.ror.net/

Yep the Lens Pen. It doesn't dry out and has a brush on one end, and it has a built in cleaner inside the cap to clean the cleaning tip.

Me too.. I carry a bottle of lens/glasses cleaner in my camera bag and have wipes and microfiber lens cloths in my pack.

Agree. Blower first, lens brush second, and then and only then a lens cloth with fluid. Fluid placed on the cloth, then applied to the glass element.

It's always a good practice to use a blower first to remove any loose grit before using the lens wipe; otherwise one risks scratching the coating on the lens.

YES....

Blow off the grit (dust) first. I carry a little bottle of "Everclear" (Pure Grain alcohol) in my kit as well - I use a micro-fiber cloth with that as well. You can hand wash the cloth(s) with "Woolite" and let them dry in a "dust-free" environment.

I have UV filters on all lenses and a microfiber lens cleaning cloth. That has slept me from a lot of problems, but I like to be prepared for the unexpected. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a safe, compact and effective lens cleaner I can put in my camera backpack?

Lens Pen.
Use the brush on one end to whisk away any loose stuff that may be present, then use the tip end to clean the lens.
Although there are special eye-glass lens pens, I figure what doesn't hurt my camera's lenses won't hurt my eyeglasses either.
I have two now: One in my camera bag and one in my handbag!

I've got fluid of some kind and lens wipe's in my camera bag. problem is I don't think to carry them with me so when ai need them, they're now where around. I blow on the lens to get loose stuff off and then treat my lens like my glass's. Hoff on them and wipe with the tail of my t-shirt; soft enough for a baby's butt!
