I went out with a friend to get some shots of sunset over Lake Minneola.
Some of the shots have red spots on them.
I think they may be from the UV filter I leave on to protect the lens.

Any ideas on what caused them.

Looks like light refraction to me.

It's a reflection in your lens. Did you shoot with a filter on the lens?

I highly doubt its a reflection off your camera, rather I would go for a reflection from maybe a boats porthole, or something like that..

Its just the sun, a hazard of shooting directly into it. You can clone them out in post.
Taking the filter off can help, especially an uncoated filter like this one, a coated filter will change the color in a filter reflection.

it's not a boat porthole it is the filter reflecting the sun back into the lens. Cheap filters have less coatings on them and reflect more, just take it off when shooting always. Put it back on when you are ready tpo head home for protection but keep it off whenever shooting.

Easy to clone out what you already hav in your photos shown, as has been competently stated already.

Remove the UV filter for sunsets. The spot is light reflection from the filter.

It sure looks like lens flare to me. Here's one technique to prevent it.

Have to agree regarding the light refraction. I shot some photos of a moon rising over a snow covered lake and got some of the same spots. Taking off the UV filter did the trick for the most part although when you get some that encompass a good part of the photo you can get some dramatic effects........

The hot spot from the sun bounces around inside the lens and this is the result.

Lens flare. Remove all filters (unless you need an ND); also remove the lens hood.
