I agree entirely with the author and I am sure others will too. A top camera will not make a photographer better although its features could make his photography easier.
When our present camera is not fit to do the job at hand it is time to update. Usually a better AF system and better high ISO performance are more than enough reasons to update.
Old cropped sensor cameras do a great job in good light so if working to specs no reason to update if always working in good light. I am not particularly fond of a large number of pixels since I have done very well with 18 megapixels and below. The photographer that needs to crop often or that enlarges to large sizes often needs more megapixels.
To make this short, updating to a better camera as the author said is no guarantee of better shots. Updating to a camera that makes the job easier is to me a very valid reason.
