I have seen some photos on here that have either a watermark or logo on the photo. I understand it from a professional point of view, but do amateurs need to do this also?

I don't think it is mandatory, but it is a way to get your name out and to protect your images

If you come up with something good, it's always at risk of being stolen...

I think that some photographers have a much higher opinion of their own stuff than is warranted. Very few photographs are in danger of being "stolen", especially at website resolutions..

A nice and well done (non-obtrusive) advertisement can enhance the image and showcase your work better than an in-your-face watermark across the frame.

Of course, in the end, it is your image and so is the watermark should you choose to use one...

NEED to? Nope, especially if you upload very low resolution photos (I normally use 100 dpi) Can you, of course. The easiest way if you use an editing program with layers, make a tranparent layer, find a font you like and type your name, © or use a logo you have designed. I usually use white then using the slider on that layer, reduce the opacity until its barely readable. For me, that seems to work and doesn't interfere with the look of the photo. You can also do that for a signature on each photo... this link is on the resources heading on here.. http://digitalprotalk.blogspot.com/2007/08/easy-john-henry-photoshop-tutorial.html good video for a professional style signature Good Luck

and a hint for those who may not know... to make the © sign
simply hold down the ALT key and typ 0169 Not all fonts will make the copyright sign but most will..

The idea of someone stealing photos from this forum doesn't make sense. First they are 72 dpi in most cases and limited to a max of 800x600 pixels. That may not even make a decent postcard. I put my signature on every photo I process but it's not a watermark and is not done for fear of theft. It's done primarily to identify them as my work. I enter a lot of online photo contests and can spot my work with my signature.

I sign only a photo after it is sold, and it is never on the photo.
Would have to agree with Larry and his remark.......
