Sony makes video editing software that will convert AVCHD files into just about any other format you need. The cheap version runs $49.95 all the way to the Pro version at $599.95. Your camera will shoot MP4 type files. It's a matter of going through all the menus to change it.

EDIT: Before you do any of what I said above, see if you can find a program on your computer called Movie Maker. It comes with Windows. It might be able to import your AVCHD file and export it as a file your ipad will read.

Thanks Jim. I discovered the menu to change to MP4 for the video. This will probably solve most of my "problem". It only shoots at 30fps, whereas the AVCHD shoots at 60. I'm going to test it outside when the rain stops and then compare the results side by side.
I will check out MovieMaker, also.
Many thanks for your time and the good info. I really appreciate it.

Thanks to blackest. I think the MP4 option will solve the problem. At first, I missed the option in the Menu. Don't know how, but I did!

If you use MP4 you will be giving up much of the quality.

Thanks, Jerry. This is the app I downloaded to my iPad and it does not seem to work with the AVCHD video format. At least that's what I understand from reading the info on their site. If I am missing something, please let me know.

This is frustrating. I have 3 really excellent videos of mama osprey feeding her chicks that I am unable to share via my iPad. Looks like I won't be using my Sony to shoot videos I want to share via my iPad until this gets sorted out.

I'd try the YouTube suggestion.

I hope someone here can help me out with this.

My Sony DSC-HX50V shoots video in the AVCHD format, which cannot be viewed on an iPad without a conversion program according to the information I have been able to find.

Could someone please recommend a good and reliable conversion program that will allow me to convert the AVCHD format video to a format that will allow the videos to be viewed on iPads? I have a PC which runs Windows 8.1.

Many thanks!

I use WinX HD Video Converter Deluxe. Not free but $35. It works well and fast.
