Bayonne, NJ to Portland, OR - Photo Op Recommendations Please!

Lazy J Loc: Pacific Northwest

I live in the Pacific Northwest and will be taking a cruise out of Bayonne, NJ. Trying to decide if there are enough photo opportunities to drive one way. Mapquest routes me pretty much straight through the middle of the US, mostly on US Hwy 80. If anyone has driven this and can suggest any must-see spots along the way, please let me know.

Also, my cruise stops at the following places. Again, anyone that has visited these places and can recommend any photo ops, it would be appreciated.

Bayonne, Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown, Quebec City, Bar Harbor, Portland (the other Portland), and Boston.

Thanks in advance! And no, there is no room in my suitcase. :-)

Can't give specifics for all along the route, but there are many sites to see along I-80 in Iowa if that is the Hwy 80 that you are referring to. The Iowa Freedom Rock, John Wayne's boyhood home, the Bridges of Madison County where the Clint Eastwood movie was filmed, Bob Feller's birthplace (baseball great), are all a short distance West of Des Moines which is located in the center of the state. Towards the eastern part of the state you can find the Amana Colonies and a number of other scenic areas along the way. Most of these can be google'd for more details.

There are PLENTY of industrial waste sites to shoot in Bayonne. Exxon has a beautiful one there.

I worked at the Baker Castor Oil Company in Bayonne (just under the Bayonne Bridge to Statn Island many years ago. The Bridge is interesting, there is a nearby high end golf course with amazing views of the NYC skyline, Bayonne itself is not in great shape these days. Nice views of the Kill Van Kull.

In Bar Harbor visit Acadia National Park

As far as driving you didn't mention how much time you have.

As you cross the Delaware River between Pennsylvania and New Jersey stop at the Delaware Water Gap rest area. You will have beautiful views of the river and the Water Gap. BTW Exxon left N.J. Years ago.
Enjoy your trip.

On a recent trip in which I was a passenger I picked up a large number of photos I would not have got on my own. Photography at Freeway Speed is a great way to pass the long miles between stops. Shutter priority at 1/500, ISO at what your camera can get away with, and STAY ALERT.

If you're stuck with the driving,

Do not drive Interstate 80 if you are looking for photos. About an hour after leaving Odgen it will be flat and after you clear the Rockies it will be even flatter. Only thing recommending Interstate 80 is that there really isn't a speed limit once you get into Wyoming and about half way through Nebraska.

Yes, and they left behind a horrendous waste site.

there is a book put out by readers digest called On The Road USA that shows all kinds of places off the main interstate within 3 to 5 miles. This book covers all the interstates in the USA.The book you would want is the East&West edition.IT shows all the places to see in every state all within 5 miles of the interstate which makes it easy to vist and easy to get right back on the interstate without a lot of wasted time. You should check it out.You can probley find it at Amason;if not call Readers Digest book dept.I don't remember what I pd.for it;but it is a great book to have when travelling. there is also a North &South edition.I hope you have a great trip.
