Picked up Nikon D5500 w/18-55mm lens. What an awesome little camera. Opinions on extra lenses? One for close up objects and one for wildlife zoom. Nikon website has a lot to choose from. Has anybody bought used from ebay?

EBAY can be a good source for used/older lenses. The 5500 has no internal focus motor, so AF-S lenses would be capable of AUTO FOCUS, AF-D lenses would meter, but would only focus manually.

The rule on EBAY, know what you are buying, do your research, read seller feedback info carefully, know what you are willing to pay, and do not get caught up in winning just to win.

I have bought several lenses on EBAY, all have worked out fine, except for one that had stuck aperture blades, but it was returned for a full refund with no hassles.

BUT stick to high feedback score sellers ;)

Edit:

Additional lenses: The 18-55 is a good walking around lens

The 55-300 Nikon is a pretty good telephoto for the money. It is reasonably sharp and will do well.

If you want close up - a 105 Macro is great, but expensive - myself I went with a 100mm f/2.8 Tokina Macro at considerably less money.

If you want longer than the 55-300, there are several choices in Tamron, Sigma or in Nikon.

I picked up a nice Sigma 170-500 zoom on EBAY not long ago.

For wide angle I went with a Tokina 11-16mm UWA, f/2.8

Yes, that is a nice camera. Save your money and get a lens with a large aperture, like f/2.8. Buy used or refurbished. I've bought and sold lots of camera equipment on ebay with no problems. Just be careful.

Absolutely outstanding post. It's like how to buy on ebay 101.

Enjoy your new D5500! I'm enjoying mine. You can use the 18-55 VR for close-ups. If you want to shoot tiny things like bugs you'll need a true macro lens, something I can't help you with. For wildlife, the longer the lens the better. However once you go longer than a 70-300 you get into big, heavy, and expensive lenses. I recommend a Nikon 70-300 VR (the VR version only) or the Tamron 70-300 VC (the VC version only). I have the Nikon 55-300 VR because it is lightweight, but it focuses slowly. I would only recommend it if weight is an issue. If cost is an issue consider a refurbished or lightly used lens. Try keh.com (the best for used gear), B&H, and Adorama.

I do not recommend ebay. The three dealers I named are reliable, have a good return policy, and give a warranty that they stand behind.

Sigma's 105mm 2.8 macro is wonderful value- just as good as Nikon's equivalent, cheaper new than a well-used Nikon.
