I wrote an email to a friend I haven’t seen since I left California. In the body of the email, I wrote that I was attaching pictures. I ended up dragging the images into the message, embedding them.
When I hit the send button, a box popped up the message “Your message says that you have attached images but no images are attached. Send anyway?
So is Gmail scanning my email for certain keywords? If I had written derogatory comments about our president, would my email get forwarded to the secret service?

Yes, Google clearly states that everything you write and/or send is eloctronically monitored for content.
As to being sent to the SS?.....Probably not.

My email client will respond even I just use the word 'attach'. The software recognizes key words regarding attachments and checks to see if you have anything attached. Probably nothing more than a courteous reminder.

That is why I stopped using Gmail. Google makes money selling information; I expect that the cost of using Gmail will be giving them information to sell, and I'm not quite sure what that will consist of or where it will lead.

Know that all the "free" email services scann all email. That's the "vig" you pay for "free". Everything you do on Google is scanned by Google (including Drive) I encrypt every file before I "park" it on Drive! email in general is not secure. I would not put anything on email that I wouldn't put on a postcard

Yes, but it's the NSA, not SS, getting it!

Nope, don't have the time or space to say all the things that NEED to be spread around the world!! Although most of the world recognizes this now! Hold onto your hats, it ain't gonna get any better!
