This sunken area in Rockefeller Center was used as an al fresco restaurant (in good weather in summer) or as an outdoor skating rink in winter (in sub-freezing temperatures). Pedestrians walking by at street level could gawk down at the diners or skaters. The bronze statue of Prometheus was backed by fountains, and was considered by some as the fourth most recognized American icon, behind the Lincoln statue, Mt. Rushmore, and the Statue of Liberty.
