I put a memory card in the computer to transfer files a little while ago and something caused the machine to lock up. This has been a very reliable Win. 7 desktop unit but whatever occurred required a hard start. Ctrl-Alt-Del had no effect on it. I pulled the card before I powered down. (A Transcend 32 gig. SD-HC 600x - 90MB/s) I have been using the card for 3 weeks w/ no problems. I normally transfer all data from the card to the computer at my 1st opportunity so I only lost a little over a gig's worth of files from a shoot earlier today. However - I had some really good shots that I hate loosing. (see the one I grabbed as a screen saver ) Now when I put the card in the computer or in my D5100 they tell me that it it needs to be formatted. Does anyone know of a recovery program (or any way) that might be able to save the files on this thing?

Try this -PhotoRec from CGSecurity' I have used this with great success on both HDs and SDs.
http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
Tried 4 so far but this is the only one that seems to be working.... Looks like it's recovering the .NEF files as .TIF?
If Recuva doesn't do it, there is a paid program called CardRecovery at CardRecovery.com. You can try before you buy, it will do a small sample of your files to prove it works. I'm a computer guy and it's saved several of my clients. Good luck.
I want to thank everyone for their help with this. I successfully recovered all the files using a open source program called Photorec suggested by Didereaux.... It comes bundled with another program called Testdisk) It's a bare bones command line affair - no fancy GUI but it not only recovered the current files it also recovered files from before my last format!!! The FAT on the card seems permanently corrupted but it was less than 15 bucks.... So what the heck, I'm a happy camper! To see some of the stuff I recovered look for 'Amazing Clouds' in the photo posting... I need help picking a favorite!!

Regards recovering your pics I hereby award you an ATTABOY! with a WHEW! cluster mounted on a WAYTOGO! base.
I am confused... what cost $15 as the program was opensource, ergo free?

As my mom (a librarian) or my dad (a English teacher) might say 'you ain't got good grammar son'.... :) twas the card I meant to refer to.... I do normally Paypal the folks who develop these programs their suggested donation to help support open source software. I'm adding Photorec to my suggested list along with FastStone & GIMP.... FastStone now supports many RAW file formats.....

The last time that happened to me my card had failed. Sorry for the possibly bad news. If neither the camera or the computer can "talk" with that card it's a good bet it has failed and no recover program can "talk" to it either.
Good luck.

Generally speaking, unless the device you are putting it into requires it, do not format anything in FAT. The FAT file format is prone to getting discombobulated, i.e. really messed up. Instead format FAT32 if you must, NTFS, or best still exFAT which can be read by Mac, Linux, and Windows. Of course test any new formatted card in your camera BEFORE expecting it to actually work.
Your SD card is not likely really broken. Even if Windows cannot currently format it.
A handy, free app, by the SD Association, can be found at
https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/. The app there can rescue many
broken SD cards. I believe it re-writes the firmware of the SD card as part of its formatting. Regardless, it formats many fudged up SD cards that Windows, et al, can't.
Needless to say; but I will anyway, DON'T use
SD Card Formatter unless you are willing to part with the data on the SD card.

Thanks... I get a little OCD'ish (& yes, I DO sort my jelly beans by color!) when it comes to stuff so I'll probably poke it with a sharp stick for a while before I give up.....
