I have a Nikon D7000 for 4 years. All DX lenses except Tamron 150-600. Just got wife-approved budget of $5000 for a FF system. Looking for suggestions.
I am a weekend hobbyist - mostly street, scenery, and wild life.
My current thoughts:
D750 with 24-120 F4 $2700
Nikon 70-200 F4 $1400
Maybe a refurbished lens for the remaining $900?

If you have a lot of DX glass that you are happy with and really know how to use you may want to only upgrade your camera to a newer DX, like a D7100 or D7200.

For FF FX, a D750, D810, or even D610 would be a nice body.

Well first! Can you have your wife call Janny????:) I would go with the D610 and get a few more lenses with the money you save. I have the D600 and love it. My most used lenses are the 105, 24-70,28-300,80-400.:)

Since you have approval-seize the opportunity to move to full frame. The Df should also be considered.

I recently purchased a D750 (I still have a D7100) and I love it. I purchased it with the 24-120 Kit, and that is a great lens. I also have the 70-200 f/2.8 lens. Also a great lens.

Then I purchased the Nikon 28-300 f/3/5-5.6 and now that lens rarely leaves my camera. I love the wide zoom range.

And with the d750, a few times I have bumped the ISO up to 128,000 (last ISO before the extended range) and the images are totally usable. When I look at the images in Lightroom (pixel peeking at 100%) there is very low noise.

I hope my experience gives you some ideas. Good luck and keep shooting.

I love my D7000 and staying with DX would be the rational thing to do. The camera is not the limiting factor in my photography.

The honest truth is it is GAS and Camera Envy. My justification is that after four years I am entitled to an upgrade. Thats my argument to wife. She agrees so I am not going to waste that!!

I recently moved from a crop sensor to a refurbished D610 from B&H and am loving it! You might look into a refurbed D750 to save a little for more glass. Here is a shot with my D610 I took this morning, even with the heavy cropping, these FF cameras are amazing. I don't have any glass suggestions, I like the fixed focal lengths and don't have much experience with the FF zooms.

I would look at either the D610 or the D750. If your current glass is ff than so much the better but all DX glass will work on the FF in DX (crop) mode. All FF glass will also work on DX.. I currently only have 2 DX lenses for my D7100 (the 10-24 Tamron which is okay but not as good as the 1/3rd more expensive Nikon lens) and the 18-70 Nikon which stays on the wife's D70 about 80% of the time. The other lenses are FX lenses (Nikkor 50mm 1.4 and Nikon older version 70-300mm ) . I will probably get a FF Nikon in the next couple of years. Both of the FF that I mentioned are good models. The 610 is a good enftry into FF but if I had the money, I would probably look to the 750... The new D8xx (not the D800) uses a Compact Flash and an SD as media. And having had a D70s that uses Compact flash, I am trying to move away from that media. It works good but the pins are EXTREMELY sensitive to bending and breaking and cards are dust sensitive. I have had very good luck with my D7100 and the dual SD cards. I love having the 2 slots as I can dedicate the second as roll over, video, or backup everything on slot 1 to slot 2 depending on what I am shooting. (If you want to you can have the camera shoot a copy of each shot as RAW to slot 1 and jpg to 2). I am not excited about the built-in wireless as I have the wireless adapter for my D7100 and have probably used it 3 times since I got it... To me, it is more of a battery waster than a convienence. Built-in GPS also is good for marking where the shots were taken BUT only works reliably outside. (again a nice feature but a battery waster if turned on).

For Street and scenery a high megapixel camera as best. Since you have a D7000 that can be used for wildlife when longer reach is beneficial, there is only benefit to looking at a D800 or D810 model.

The D750 deal has a nice price tag, but it doesn't actually target your needs.

At the top of your list should indeed be the 24-120mm f/4G.

Choosing between the 70-200mm f/4G and the f/2.8G VRII is a tough call. If part of your idea of Street Photography is closer to People Pictures, go for the f/2.8 version. That is doubly true if you ever shoot anything in gymnasiums or auditoriums.

I don't see a lot of value in going for a few hundred dollars lower price tag and settling for equipment that just is not what is really needed. Wait a little longer and save up the difference. You'll be using it for years and the better images will be with you for a lifetime.

I'm with you Erv! I would also recommend the D610. Great camera and lots left over for some great lenses. Oh, I would keep the 7000 as well and use the DX and FX lenses on it. Just a thought!

I agree with Kmgw9v, consider the Nikon Df.
Not only does it accept Nikon Legacy Lenses, but you can set it to recognize any DX lenses you put on it and it will make the necessary adjustments.

ALL Nikon DX and FX cameras will accept and recognize all Nikon lenses made since 1977. The difference being auto focus which may require an internal focus motor in the camera for some older lenses (Nikon D3xxx and 5xxx require that the lens have an internal SWM silent wave motor. All cameras above the D3xxx and 5xxx have focus motors in the body of the camera to handle lenses without SWM. Also, older lenses MAY NOT have autoexposure, depending on the lens. Other than those exceptions, an FX camera will work with a DX lens but the lens will NOT expose the entire sensor. A DX camera will work with ANY FX lens, however the viewing area will be limited to the center area of the lens (cropping effect). NOTE: this applies only to NIKON / Nikkor brand lenses, other brands may or may not be completely compatible. Also, remember that many of the newer lenses do not have aperture rings because aperture adjustment is done by the controls on the camera and some older lenses do require that the aperture ring be locked at the highest (f/16, f/32 or whatever) aperture and the camera will open it to what it needs.

Your used to the DX, stick with the DX. Upgrade to the D7200. perhaps you should rent a D7200 for a while. You do not need to upgrade to FF to get better photos.
