I am change over to a Wista field camera from a 4X5 studio camera and am looking for a portable tripod on an extremely limited budget. I can't afford $400 for a lightweight lava tripod. Also looking for a backpack for my camera, 3 lenses, light meter and accessories. Any suggestions?
Hm, i have a wista, but use an older type camera bag that I use for general storage and don't use a backpack so I can't be of anyhelp.
WIth regards to a tripod. Check out something used. WHo cares if it has "bruises" as long as it is stable. I would also look for a tilt and pan head as I don't think a ballhead would be a good think with that camera. I use a monfrotto, but the tripod is at the lab at school so I can't give you the model number, but I can't say it is lightwieght as it isn't carbon fiber. You might check out a Vanguard, they make nice products that aren't as expensive as Gitzo.
I don't so large format, but I use a Husky Quickset which is really stout, tubular legs and pan head. I've seen them on ebay.
Thanks folks for the suggestions.
will check out vanguard, also thinking of a Tiltall from Freestyle Photo.
"Lightweight" tripod and "large format" are mutually exclusive terms.
true, some are "lighter" than others :)
I have a 4x5 Wisner. I keep it in a case from Renaissance Photo Tech. My lenses are also in cases from that company. I then located a backpack that the cases would fit in. You almost have to go to the store to try out the pack w/ the cases or just locate a pack.
The sturdier the tripod the better.
Adorama out of Chicago may have something. I use 2 places in Columbus OH for my 4x5 equipment hunting. Midwest Photo Exchange and Columbus Camera Group.
They are all on line. You could also check out View Camera magazine for information.
My last view camera was a Kodak Viewmaster, 4X5, with Ektar lens. It was old but beautiful.
Thanks kid for the info. Not familiar with Columbus but have used Midwest and my camera and lenses are in Renaissance cases. I do have a nice sturdy tripod, only problem is it weighs about 25 pounds with the gearhead on it. Subscribe to View Camera magazine even though they irritate the heck out of me
