Looking to upgrade!

I am not as yet the photographer that I someday will be and am still quite the newby. That said; I have seen many post with the truly seasoned guys who use the 70-200mm f/2.8, be it on a crop sensor or on ff camera. I have been considering a move to 80-200mm f/2.8 from my Sigma 18-200 f/3.3-6.3. As my camera is a Canon 50D, would this be worthwhile? I ask this because a move to the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 is out of my price range.

2.5 F-stops faster and a much higher quality ( sharpness and vivid colors) is what you can expect. ( and a pound or two heavier ).
But you will never have to upgrade that lens !

Which specific model of 80-200mm f/2.8? When you say 'Canon 70-200mm f/2.8', do you mean all models IS and non IS? All versions of the IS, I and II? None are cheap, but the prices are much different where a used and discontinued model might be in your price range.

Also, you may want to look at the Tamron and Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8. They can pull their weight without the price tag.

I'm not particularly interested in IS. I may look into Tokina, Tamron and Sigma as well.

I've had the Canon f/2.8 IS, but sold it and got the Tamron F/2.8. I like it for my weddings and indoor events.
There is also a Canon F/4 model, for less $$$. A lot depends on what you want to use it for.

Thanks. I'm a relative novice and I use it for a lot of non-specific tasks. No specialties yet.

In the 70-200mm f/2.8 Lenses Tamron hit the home run with this Model.
Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 di vc usd..... NOT the Macro Model.

I think it's pretty common for people to be WAY over lensed. Nothing wrong with spending the big bucks if you've got it but many times we are tempted to get what we rarely use and would be better served with a variety of less expensive lenses than one expensive one. I have the 70-200 f4 non-IS and its not only served me very well but it only cost me $525 at the time I bought it.
The f4 lens is also very well regarded and can easily be carried all day it's so small and light.
When it's getting pretty dark, 2.8 isn't all that fast either! Good luck. ;-)

I too, think that some are over lensed. I'm no professional, but I've been into photography for more years than I care to admit. Until about 10 years ago, all I shot with was Minolta 35mm. Then I tried "digital", and all of a sudden I became addicted to the instant rewards of being able to see what my shots looked like. I progressed from the simple cameras to the Panasonic Lumix cameras, which I stayed with for a number of years, and was quite happy with. Then I discovered the Canon crop sensor Rebel XSi. Wow! What a difference! I used it for about 3 years, along with my Panasonic Limix FZ200, which had a dynamite zoom lens. A few months ago, I won a bidding war on Ebay for a Canon 50D. That's when I truly realized how much the lens contributes to the images. I had a couple left over after selling the Rebel and from there I decided to move a bit, until my skill level will dictate more expensive glass.
