Hard tp say. Position your self away away from the setting sun!

Use your lens hood. A quality lens and the hood should control most flare. About the only filters I use now are circular polarizers (CP) and Neutral Density (ND).
I used to use UV or clear filters for "protection, but I noticed that I had better IQ without them.

I agree with Nikonesian except I use a grad nd with playing field shots that have sky to narrow the exposure range. I only use filters if I need them. In 50 years I have never damaged a lens so, for me, just as soon not have an extra piece of glass messing with the light.
