Lens hood on Nikon 18-140mm

I just bought a refurb Nikon 18-140mm lens. It did not come with a lens hood. Nikon recommends its bayonet HB-32 hood. Adorama sells them for $12.95 plus shipping. The question is of the many UHH users of this lens out there, how often do you shoot with the lens hood in place and do you think it is really needed? Much of my shooting will be with a circular polarizer mounted on the lens.

For what it is worth, I think you need a hood on any lens used outside.

Definitely get the lens hood. It can help to prevent flare. The petal shaped hoods are designed to block as much stay light as possible without causing darkening in the corners.

You will probably find opinions vary on this subject. I have that same lens and have used it outside on very sunny days without any flare issues. I don't use hoods.

It's always a good idea to use a hood. It offers protection against glare and bumps. I'm glad that Nikon hasn't made the colored paint on the numbers optional.

By all means do use a hood.
Mounting a hood on the lens will not interfere with the CPL.

Re: "Nikon not marking the colored paint optional." I'm still laughing...

Fit a hood - yes. Take it off when you might/use a flash.

I never take my hood off. Inside, outside...it stays on. Just makes me feel pro-like.

You need a complete package--you should buy the hood.

I've never used that lens, but I do use lens hoods. Lens hoods that screw in to the front filter threads makes using a CP filter with a lens hood easy.

Here is how the shape of a petal shaped hood corresponds with the sides and corners of the sensor.

The hood may also prevent lens damage.

Unless I am indoors shooting with a flash, I always have it on.
