I recently purchased an ASUS Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1 for $700. As near as I can figure, except for the lack of a super high definition display, it appears to be the same as the recently released Macbook which goes for $1300. Yes, unfortunately, it has Windows 8.1.

An annoying pop-up from MORETECHSUPPORT.com hit me when I logged on to UH.

You should be getting OS 10 free.

If it was my notebook... I'd go online and join the Windows Insider program. Then I's set the connection up for "fast", hook up and download Windows 10... NOW! Mild warning, the combined download/upgrade does take a long time, so do it on a hardwired stable connection to the internet. I would not use wireless since the DL is long on a fast connection.

I did that as soon as preview build 9926, and I am now up to build 10049 with the Spartan preview. Three major upgrades have been flawless, everything I hook to it works without driver hunts. It's fast and stable on a ten year old Intel Atom processor (netbook cpu)and 2 Gb of RAM. LED monitor, 500 Gb hard drive. Win 7 base, upgraded.

The communication about "what I would like to see" is two way and I expect 10 to be beyond consumer ready when it rolls out this summer.

In the meantime, I'm running and happy. No complaints.

I have it on my main computer and two people I know are using it on their work machines.

I wonder if that would work on my crappy old Compaq (about 6 years old) running Windows 7...

Windows will have "kinks" 6 years after it is released; waiting will not help ....

BS, I haven't seen any kinks yet. People who won't jump when new software is offered show a serious lack of Cojones. I'd do it today since 10 is already in preview leaps beyond 8/8.1.

And I have been one of those (like you) who have been telling people to wait a year for the 25 years I have been teching and consulting.

Now 72, I find the joy in life is working the kinks out, both when I get up in the morning and with new software.

Kinks are GODs reminder that you are still alive

If I had a crappy old Compaq, and it really was as crappy as old Compaq's get, I'd give it a go. You're not still doing all your work on the Compaq anyway, ..............are you?

Unfortunately, but not by choice. My wife upgraded her computer last year and it has Win 8, I only go near it with a cross and holy water and when Microsoft asked me how I liked it, they got an ear full.

To make a long story short, I inherited her old (relatively speaking of course) Acer that would be nice IF my computer guru could figure out why it continues to boot loop even with a complete format and install of Windows 7 Ultimate.

Some day soon I will just have to squeak down to a real tech and pay them to fix it...

I'm pretty sure he has tried that but I will inquire. Eveything seems to go well until he startls loading the various drivers back in. I wonder if there is some kind of hardware issue that is causing it.

It was a pretty decent laptop until the virus(s).

This was one of the biggest obstacles when I was a consultant. By the time I reformatted the drive, installed the OS, installed all the updates, patches, user software with patches again, then went to the hardware manufacturer and download the latest drivers for audio, video, LAN, chipset, etc, installed their printers and networked software and charged my hourly rate PLUS pickup and delivery time; they could purchase a NEW laptop with full warranty for LESS money.

On more than one occasion I got some perplexed reactions when they were told to purchase new hardware and donate or scrap the offending machine.

Did not bode well for employee/employer relations in their offices either...

So VERY VERY glad that I retired over 5 years ago... I don't think my heart would last thru another (would be the fourth) heart attack.

I understand where you're coming from completely. Some times you just have to "Let it go". Years ago when we were self-employed (my wife had a line of hand-made clothing and maternity dresses) we travelled all over the country doing trade and craft shows and invariably someone would walk into our booth and say something stupid like, "It must be nice to only have to work on the weekends". It's not something to say to someone who has spent the last week working a minimum of 12 hour days...

Didn't install the Adblock soon enough. That is one very mean ad. Had to shut the whole system down and load another browser.

Thanks also for the Windows 10 link. I had looked but I couldn't find it.
