I've been waiting impatiently for Sigma to start shipping the Contemporary lens for Nikon. I'm not going to wait any longer.

I've decided to take the plunge and go with the Tamron. One of the reasons is the direction of rotation for the zoom is the same as that on a Nikon lens. Plus, the images I have seen posted here are amazing.

We do have a local camera store that has the lens in stock so I can have one in my hands in a matter of minutes. In fact, I have already tried their display unit on my camera.

I expect my D7100 back from Nikon by Wednesday so I will have the lens ready to use on my trip this weekend to the east coast.

I had a customer asking about the image quality between the Tamron 150-600mm and the newly released Sigma 150-600mm Contemporary model. Since the Sigma is only available in the Canon mount right now, I decided to mount the two competitors up and take a shot with each for a quick comparison. Subject matter is lacking in the city so I shot a transformer on a power pole a half a block away.
Images can be downloaded for direct comparison on your own. I find the sharpness quite similar. The differences to me are in the Bokeh and color rendition. The Sigma's Bokeh is softer, yet its colors are richer. At least to my eye. Feel free to leave your own impressions here. (And yes, the pole is THAT crooked!)

These lenses are very close. See my images in gallery, one at bottom of page 1 "The Hummers Are At It Again" and one in "How You Like Me Now?". Granted, I used 2 different cameras, Tamron on Nikon and Sigma on Canon so my analysis must be considered with extreme caution. I agree the colors seem richer with the Sigma at least on the Canon mount.

Madman, I don't think you will be disappointed. I use the Tamron on the D7100 and D3300 with outstanding results. Please see my image with the latter in the gallery entitled "How You Like Me Now?" if you have any doubts.

You can get excellent photos with either of these lenses. And even if one was slightly better than the other, you might still get one that was a little off in specs. Not to mention that the two photos we saw on this tread may have been focused slightly differently. I say, "check out the specs, read the tests (with a grain of salt), get the one that looks best, try it out, keep it if it seems OK, and then DON'T LOOK BACK!!!"

Your insight is very much appreciated. And certainly the images that I've seen here, including yours, have been a major justification for my decision.
