Just in case you didn't realize this, lens hoods serve a purpose, other than making your lens look bigger and more impressive.

Thanks Jerry.
I didn't think light could slip thru the sides of a lens without a lens hood. If it can slip thru, from the inside out, why can't it get in from the outside :?:

I always use a lens hood, for the several excellent reasons mentioned. Lack of a hood where one is obviously needed, such as outdoor shooting into the sun, is the sure mark of a knucklehead.

Is this what you mean? He meant from the side of the front of the lens, like when you're driving, and the low sun shines in the side window, right into your eyes. It's entering the glass, not the metal body.

"A lens hood keeps the light from entering the lens from the sides and degrading the quality of your image. It helps improve the saturation, color, contrast, and density of the photograph."

O.K. all you idiots out there without lens hoods - Your idiots.

Vital: meaning essential. Rather - nice to have sometimes. I agree that some make your gear look more impressive. Except when you put a black lens hood on one of those wonderful cream colored Canon lenses.

With some hoods, it makes it very difficult to use a polarizing filter. Then again, at the angle where the hood becomes desirable, the polarizing filter probably not necessary.

And for those knuckleheads without them: use your hand.

I don't use them on my wide angle lenses because it makes it hard to use my polarizing filter. Plus, wide angle hoods are so small that they're almost useless. I just have my camera on a tripod and use my hand.

do you just like pissing people off???????
you mess up some good points by calling we who don't fully agree with you idiots. i come from a time when lens hoods were either non-existant or little used. look at the large and medium format cameras from 1860-1960. look at the photo mags from the 30's to the 60's. remember all the 35mm's . great pictures were taken for 100 yrs without lens hoods. how many did A. Adams take without a hood??

For some situations hoods are vital or near-vital. For others they aren't. Thus, people who use hoods are not idiots. Nor are those who don't use them idiots. And some of us, like me, almost always choose to use the hoods. We're not idiots, either.

If they were really necessary one would be included with every lens. We all know none of these camera companies would gouge you for a necessary part or the lens. ;)

Well...not necessarily. It could be that some folks like the look of reduced clarity when shooting into the sun or a light source and welcoming the appearance of flare and things...I know I do.

Lots of film shooters that I know embrace that look.
