Camera to computer software

Hi,

I have a coolpix 885 and am looking for the basic transfer: camera to computer, software. So far I've found the new version that covers all nikons, but you have to use a memory card reader. I've always plugged my camera in to my computer and done it in a jiff. What is the name of this basic old fashioned transfer software?
thanks

I would get photoshop elements 9. It is around $100 and can transfer your photos from your camera to the computer as long as you still have your cable that came with the camera. In addition its one heck of a photoediting software.

If you don't want to do anything but transfer, buying an external card reader ($20 to $30), or some other USB peripheral you might need that has a card reader in it would be far cheaper than any software. For example, I have a lunchbox sized Epson printer that does only 4X6 prints and it has a card reader in it. The printer was $100 and serves two purposes. Then use the file management of Windows, such as Windows Explorer, to grab and drag photos from the memory card to whatever folder on the hard drive that you want and it will copy the photos automatically. You can also use Windows Explorer to delete photos from your card, carry other photos to other computers from yours, etc. This takes a lot of hours of run time off of your camera's internal electronics that get warm while it's connected to USB.

A card reader is also usually much faster than a USB cable from the camera. There's no software required for a card reader because the computer sees the card in the reader as an external hard drive and reacts accordingly if you're using any operating system above XP.

If you DO want to edit though, as is said in another post, get yourself into the Adobe family of software immediately and don't bother trying to save $30-$50 by using off brands. Adobe is the industry standard that all others try to live up to for a reason.

Start with an inexpensive package and work your way up to full-blown PhotoShop over time. All Adobe packages use a vaguely similar user interface so they are familiar to you as you move up to more and more features. I'd still recommend a card reader that can handle the newest high capacity SD and mini-SD cards because that's the edge of technology right now.

That's my 2 cents...

If you're running Windows, it should work automatically. It does on my computer. Or I should say did. I currently use PSE6 but I used to just use the windows program. I don't remember what it's called though. If I can remember, I'll re-post.
