I have always used 3rd party batteries with good luck. I recall from an archive posting that some cameras require "genuine" batteries because they have "chips".
I just ordered another set of batteries for my 7 year old Panasonic TZ3 when looking at the candidates some of the very low cost ones made no mention of the word "Lithium" and that can perhaps be the key to the negative comments regarding non-genuine batteries. Indeed they may NOT be Lithium based batteries!! So if you buy a secondary supplier look for the magic L-Word.
If you UHH search for batteries you will find the reference to a scientific study rather than the "I-feel" comments. As I recall, batteries were loaded with a resister and the voltage drop vs time was measured.

Why would anyone want to sell a genuine Nikon battery/charger combo if it is still good OR if they had not just replaced it successfully with a 2nd or 3rd or 4th party battery. Humm, why is it that we, all of us, use the phrase 3rd party,,, is 2nd party the original company? Guess that is one of those "just whatcha do" language things that Howie Mandel of the 1980 comedy routine was built on.
