I started with Atari, I have converted to Apple 13 months ago. Love it but my PC programs are only slowly being matched by Apple's. Parallels works but I often feel I should have a PC laptop instead of Parallels and keep both a real PC and my Mac Air. Memory is a problem with lots of photos onthe Apple Laptop (Air Book).

iMac, MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone .... I've been an Apple user for two decades. At this point I could never change! Totally happy with their products.

You are paying for the name and that is all. With the money you save buying a Windows portable computer, with a bigger display, for 1/3 the price, you can buy a really nice lens, or even a nice body.

I'm thinking about getting a new laptop that I can take with on vacations, etc. so I can work with my photos. I've been looking around a bit and I have to say I was VERY impressed with the Apple macbook pro, even though it was only 13 inches. The retina display is really incedible, but like all things made by Apple it comes at a price. It's at the very least, twice the price of an HP or something else comparable. For me to get that laptop, with the larger flash drive, the larger ram,and some software for photos and whatever, it's pushing the $2,000.00 window. I've never owned an Apple product and have looked at them before, but again,I got my HP desktop for less than half the cost of the Apple and I still wonder if I should have just gotten the Apple anyway.

No one mentioned apple support. Caring and amazing and quick to reach. Protection plan worth every penny. My teenage daughter has gone through 2 hard drives at no cost. Yes it was her fault.

Alert If you were to purchase your Mac at a Best Buy be absolutely sure that you get the Apple 3 year support plan and not some Best Buy support. Also don't let any of the "Geek Squad" set up your computer for you!

Best bet is to order exactly what you want directly from Apple.

You get what you pay for...as you know! All previous Mac fans have hit IMPORTANT points and these are something to consider. I worry about your frustration and psyche esp. if you decide to go with the Windows machine again (non Win8 I hope...!). Nothing worse than to quickly have to bring in those Windows "patches" to fix all the inherent problems with that kind of machine...from the git go. It does NOT take very long for Window machines to start slowing down from all the bugs one tends to pick up off the WWW.

MACS are well-worth the price-period! They are a relatively problem-free machine and programmers "tend" to write more hacky malware for the other than Macs. MACS are very intuitive and fluid (GUI)...and innovative to boot. They are MADE for the photo editing community and do not know of ANY of my photography cohorts whom do not use one. If you just need something to check your email...well then...Windows is okay...at least for a "while".

I HAVE THE SOLUTION FOR YOU! WAIT. SELL THAT BIKE AND YOU WILL HAVE MORE THAN ENOUGH GREEN TO COVER A NEW MAC LAP PLUS A BIG MOPED!!! Wait. WHATTTTT?

Two words: 'Genius Bar' if you live somewhere near an Apple Retail store, then you have free access (yes, FREE) to a youngish geek who will very patiently explain your hardware and or software issues/challenges or just show you how to use it. Plus in store classes and etc. I dropped into an Apple Store to pick up a Mac Book Pro for my wife on Christmas Eve and asked the sales person why Apple Pay wasn't working on my iPhone 6? Not only did they obsess figuring out my issue (I had my location set as South Africa which explains why the maps where all in kilometers DOH!) but the sales guy noticed a crack in the screen and said: "this is a single line crack on the corner with no obvious Impact which falls within my discretion to fix for free. Can you leave it here for an hour?" Totally! (And for the record, I had dropped the phone on stone steps with a very thin case on it; totally my fault). I used to work for HP but now have 3 macs, an iPad mini and an iPhone. Yes, Virginia, PCs are cheaper, but with Apple, there really is a Santa Claus ;-)

The most cost effective solution for me was a desktop, with dual 10 bit displays, 32 gb ram, 2 gb Quadro K620 display adapter, 1 tb system drive cached with SSD drive, and a 4 Tb "enterprise-class" storage volume with RAID 5.

You sound like you really know what you're talking about, so much so that I don't even know what you mean by a "1 tb system drive cached with SSD drive." :) However, that $2300 you've paid for a system including dual displays has me puzzled because I paid $1490 for my one monitor (MultiSync 27" Widescreen LCD Monitor with SpectraViewII Color Calibration Solution) and another close to $2000 for a Dell XPS Studio 9100 (bought in 2011).

If I were looking for a laptop or "travel" computer now I'd probably seriously look at the microsoft surface pro line! It's a tablet/laptop hybrid and more than powerful enough to run PS and LR etc. The screen resolution is equivalent to the apple. Probably just over 1/2 the price of the apple..

Ah, the lone voice in complete disagreement with the rest. Please tell us how you came to the conclusion that "you are paying for the name and that is all."

I don't wish to start a flame war, but I've been in the computer business since the early 1980s, and can remember when Apple was the "underdog." That they've grown into the world's most valuable business is a testament to the vision and execution of that vision by Steve Jobs. It remains to be seen how long they'll be at the top of the pyramid, but for now, Apple has defined how the computer industry should be run.

Many seem very much satisfied with their Apple products, myself included. I have an iPad and an iPhone. For computing, I stay with Windows machines. My major issue with Apple is the corporation, not the product.

I suspect you'll enjoy it, but as you say, it's considerably more expensive than a similarly equipped PC.

It was the singer Bono who recently described devotees of Macs, Ipads, Ipods, and Iphones as a "cult". There is some truth to this when you see people camping on the sidewalk to be in line for the latest "I" gadget.

Don't know about the posT Steve Jobs versions. but I spent many, many hours on my mac doing actual work. I've also spent many hours on a PC, either waiting for the boot up or trying to get it working again by uninstalling those infamous updates. I've had many viruses on the PC and zero on my MAC, not that they don't exist, but far less numerous. Buy a Mac and you won't look back. :-D
