I just received my D7100 on Wednesday and I have been starting to learn about it's operation and I have a question about the Control panel. I have the battery charged, and 2 SanDisk Extreme 16GB cards installed and formatted. I was trying out various adjustments and when I shut the camera off I expected the Control panel to go blank. When I shut it off, on the right side it still displays that the two cards are installed and under it it shows the number of pictures that can still be taken as a number enclosed in brackets like this [xxx]. The top card indicator has a 1 displayed inside it which I assume is showing which card is being used. Should this still show when you switch the camera "off" or should it be completely blank when off? I just wanted to know if this is normal, since I just got it, or if I should be concerned and contact B&H about it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
It's normal and minimal battery drain.
I like it because if I forget to put a memory card in it shows "ERR" even when turned off.
Yes James this is normal. I also shoot the D7100. I just got back from shooting the Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial. Down loaded card to computer, put card back in camera and turned off. It shows 2 cards and [415] in the panel.
I, like Larry above, like this feature for the reasons stated.

Not only does my D7100 do that, my D90 & D80 do it and my D3000 did it as well.

Thanks for the quick response. I thought it was probably normal but I just wanted to be sure. I never had the control panel on any other cameras that I have owned so I just wanted to be sure before I registered it . Thanks again.

I'll bet that the Battle of New Orleans Bicentennial was great to shoot.

I really don't think your D3000 did this, it does not even have the top LCD on it.

I have the same camera and love it. It is normal. Enjoy your d-7100.

On further reflection and a look at the Nikon archived cameras, you are right. I guess old age is starting to mess with my memory.

It was James. Would have been better without the over control of the federal park rangers. Limited area to photograph the musket and cannon fire.

Thanks. I thought it probably was normal but since I just got it, I wanted to be sure before I went on-line to register it.

I imagine it would be. I haven't done any shooting in the parks for awhile now, but I guess the world being what it is today we will have to adjust as rules change whether we like it or not.
Ditto James on the D7000 also. Only time is goes off is if you remove the battery or if the battery is completely drained otherwise when you replace the battery the card display will come back on.
