Hi there.... New to the site and trying to find my way around... I bought a Canon Rebel SL1 EOS 100D and it came with 18-55 Lens which isn't enough for any distance..... I am told that I shouldn't go too big as it has to do with the light getting in? Please be patient..I know nothing as yet ..lol My question is... What numbers should I be looking for in a lens? I am a newbie but I do need to be able to focus in on things in the distance and this lens just isn't going to do that..... Any help would be much appreciated xo

Your most cost effective option at this stage of your experience will be a Tamron SP 70-300 VC lens.

We are not up to the budget stage yet boberic.
We are up to the stage where we desrcibe the difference between focal length and F/stops in the lens part number.

Sorry but that will be quite a detailed post and I do not have time to explain.
Hopefully someone else will.
If not, I will get back to it when I can.

I surly would love to know the difference between lower priced and higher since I am going into this rather blind... I really don't want to be too cheap and get something I won't be happy with... So I have know idea even on the prices....

I got that same lens with my CanonT3i and at the same time I got the 70-300 non IS lens. They have both served me well but if I were to go back & do it over I would get the 55-250mm lens with Image Stabilization. As it is I'm not covered between 55-70mm of focal length. You may want to find a camera store in your area that will let you try it out on your camera in the store. You may find that they can reccomend something else if the 55-250 doesn't have enough zoom to suit you.

Yes … Budget is a factor on recommendations.
Just off the top, I have to say I love my EF 300 2.8 IS L with a 2x extender. My wife likes it too but can't carry it …. (whew) hehehe
Her favorite is the EF 100-400 3.5-5.6 IS that she uses with her Rebel.

Nancy - take the suggestions and look to http://www.the-digital-picture.com/ for reviews of each lens suggestion. For a Canon brand you'll probably want to look at the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM. In the US a used copy can be found for less than $400.

If you can afford it the best Canon lenses are their L series. Excellent crisp sharp lenses but to get the focal length you want, I suspect you'd be looking at $1000 +. If your budget is more modest as it is for most of us the 55 - 250mm I referred to earlier will be much less. If you buy directly from Canon, you can get refurbished Canon lenses at less than new prices and you can be assured they will be good products. I just bought a 50mm 1.8 prime as a refurb. It works great.

Nancy, welcome to the Hog.
You'll get lots of help. I just want to make sure you are aware that it's possible that the things you're trying to focus on that you speak of you will actually not be able to focus on with anything. So you need to keep all this in perspective.
Describe exactly the kinds of things you are wishing to shoot. Or take some pictures with the lens you have and post them so we can SEE what you're trying to shot.
Again, welcome. ;-)

Wow! Thank you! Are them links for me to go to? lol I feel kind of lost... I think I understand what your saying ... thats sure a start!! lol So It really is an important decision.... I will need to know more about focal length... I think your telling me that between the two lenses you are blurry and missing out on some of your view? jeeeesh

OK I think that you should learn the basics of your current gear. Spend lots of time shooting with your camera. Read , about exposure and composition. There is all kinds of free tutorials available. I think Peterson's book about the exposure triangle is a good place to start. Take your time and have fun.

I recently purchased a Tamron 16-300mm lens which I use as the walk-around lens on my Canon 7D. I have owned and compared it to both the Canon 18-200mm and the Sigma 18-250mm, and of them all, I like the Tamron the best. It is am image stabilized lens for about $619.00 new on Amazon.com.
