18-55 dx versus a 24-85 fx

I have a d5200 and had a d5000 before that. I am on my 3rd 18-55dx lens. They are cheap. Maybe too cheap .. lol I'm getting a d610 and while I don't want to spend a ton on the initial lens. I don't want to replace it every two and 1/2 years. Which is my worry with the 24-85fx kit lens. I'm either buying the 24-85fx or the 18-35fx. Any input helpful. Also any sigma or other brand that I should be considering. I shoot a lot of landscape and it needs to stand up! Will the 24-85dx stand up or is it plastic too?

Why would have to replace these lenses? Do the mechanical parts wear out?

Yeah the 18-55dx has plastic parts. I don't know exactly where, but what happens is zoom starts to stick as you zoom in and out. And eventually the barrel will tilt slightly and cause part of your image to be out of focus while another part is in focus. The good news is the first one fetched 50 bucks on e-bay and I told the guy exactly what I just told you. I'm sure he replaced the plastic part and made 50 bucks. There are refurbished all over the internet on the 18-55dx, for not not much.

First, I love the 18-55. The pictures are awesome. I know the plastic mount can break, but for less than $100, you can't beat it. And you can pick up another one on eBay for $70 all day long.

The 24-85 is also a great lens. Just check out the reviews. They consistently says it well exceeds what they expect of a "kit" lens. Plus it has a metal mount, so it's more durable. And while I don't know if weight necessarily translates to durability, it just feels much heftier.

I recommend the lens.

Let start from the beginning. The 18-55 kit lens is a DX lens and the 24-85 is an FX lens. I do not recommend that you use the 18-55 with a FX camera.
Your main concern seems to be replacing lenses every 2 years. This I cannot understand because lenses are selected according to the intended use. The 24-85 lens used with a full frame camera will be an all purpose lens and if you do not need anything wider than 24mm for your landscape photography which is pretty wide with full frame you are all set. In regard to tele lenses you have many of them from where to choose based on your interest and the 70-200 f2.8 comes to mind if you want to go the expensive route.
Except for wildlife photography those two lenses should cover your needs for years to come.

That's what I was after. Durability of the kit lenses. If there was a problem with the 24-85fx holding up I was going to buy the 18-35fx

Here it is. What you have is two different lenses types used on different bodies which do not see things the same. Will the lens work on both but there is a trade off either way. The dx sees things at 85% of the fx which see it as 100% percent of 35mm. If you were to go to 2 & 1/4 there would be the same problem. A 100 mm lens is not the same on each camera. The perspectives change. On the dx body the (fx 200mm lens used) lens of the fx camera becomes 300mm. When you use a dx lens on a fx body it will work but there will be vignetting. I suspect that they are a multiple of 1.5 or a division of 1.5 depending upon which way they go. fx lens on a dx body multiply by 1.5 and dx on fx divide by 1.5 or multiply by .67. Though one wants them to work they will not be the same. The lens I use on my dx is 18 and gives me a perspective close to 28 as compared to a 35mm. Remember we are using 35mm as a reference here so everything is compared thusly.

I love my Nikon 24-85 G VR lens. I bought mine right after I bought the D810. This image was taken with that combo.

The 24-85 is an excellent lens for the money. The word "kit" has no bearing on how this lens performs. However, since you are concerned
about construction, the internals are plastic. The 18-35 also has plastic internals. Now, the 16-35 VR has metal internals, but you are going to pay a lot more for it. So, if your looking for a better built lens, I would go with the 16-35 VR. I your more budget minded, then go with either the 24-85 or 18-35.

For landscape with a full frame you want the 16-35.

I have a 24-85 lens and love it. It is sharp and very well made. For the money it can't be beat.
