This weekend Shawn and I dove at Old Airport South, and Magic Sands Beach Park both in Kona, Hawaii. The Old Airport site is a nice dive, but difficult entrance and exit. Magic Sands has one of the best Lava Tubes to dive in, but the swim to the tube and back is long (and, with a sea running, the sandy beach entrance would be scary to a beginner.) But, we had lots of fun and out of nearly 500 shots I got a few that are representative. Ambient light only, no strobes, Sony Nex-5 with Nauticam housing. 18-55mm lens, Magic Filter filter.
Under the skylight just around the bend from the entrance
These guys are hard to shoot, constantly in motion
The sea was running! Looking up from 15 feet
My first try at HDR U/W! The 'streak' is a cornet fish
Yellow Tail Coris, pretty and skittish
Two Lizard fish together! Never seen that before.
Even starfish have camoflage. 25feet deep, sunlight only.
Just another day on the reef... 30 feet, ambient light only
How beautiful. Always wanted to do that but closest I got was surface skimming out of Key West.

I just noticed where you're from. I welcomed a girl this afternoon from Kuaui and a girl from Lahaina came on. It was the first time I'd really seen anyone on from Hawaii. I was telling her my favorite place on the islands is Maui and second the Big Island. I've been to Hawaii about 7 times and lovedddd it. Kona was my favorite but I loved the waterfalls in Hilo. We stayed at the Outrigger Keahou and I loved it because it looked right at Kahalu'u park. That was great snorkeling to me and the resort because part of it is literally IN the water. Anyway, back to photography. I love your shot of the Coris? I've never seen one but they are beautiful and the lizard fish isn't pretty but they're neat because of camoflage. I'd seen the Old Airport site but I passed. Vertigo and rocks don't mix. :x :-)
