Photos and Videos at the Top

Have any of you taken note of the recent tread for online news outlets to place a full-width photograph or a video clip at the top of the Web page?

This placement (1) immediately engages the eye and (2) produces interest, both of course depending on the usual visual techniques for each media to impress viewers.

This strong visual introduction, wordless, harks to the traditional paper editions that blared the lead story with a large and often candid photograph to hook the reader.

I suggest this prominence given to photographs and video clips raises the value of imagery in the public eye.

I note also this prominence has included more attention to image quality, particularly skin tones. Digital processes now enable the image-maker to adjust his work more easily for a more natural skin tone of human subjects. Hopefully, begone red, orange, and yellow skin tones in imagery.

This Web link shows an example of the use of video and still photography at the top of the page:

Very insightful "another view' The trend in a majority of
sites I see is a wordpress look with large photo on top,
a lot of white space and scroll down for blurbs of info.

The enticement of a visual that leads into or seduces the
viewer really has been a marketing device for years. One key photo that gives you the intended message.

Years ago I taught a "the business of creative" type course
and would force young Art Director hopefuls to create one visual that does the job. I then played radio commercial and pushed
them to draw the visuals they heard from the spot.
Got amazing results with this approach.
