The great thing with photographing food is that 1. You dont have to make it smile 2. It doesn't run away or fidgit
3. When you've got the shot how you want it, you can eat your model!! In a portrait studio you would be an instant canniball.

At a recent headhunters convention, one of the canniballs said to the chief "Can I be rude about your wife" The head headhunter replied sure you can " The canniball said "I cant stand your wife " to which the head replied "No problem, push her to the side of the plate and eat the vegatables.

Dang you I made it past the burgers but the ribs got my stoumach growling. For an Englishman, you sure know what gets american men hungry!!! Now to find a nice photo of an ice cold coke and a photo of apple pie for dessert.

Thanks for the comment , appreciated. I suppose they are supposed to make you feel hungry, if they do they worked.

I use in general a Canon EOS50D not an expensive one and I dont mess with the images, if the customer wants to play around thats on their dollar.
If the budget allows, I use 4x5 sheet film in a Sinar Camera. I also use the lights that I think are great value, they are called Alien Bees and coincidently are designed and made from American components in TENNESSEE how about that!
I have 2 650 and 1 400 watt units, with stands and reflectors the cost was about $1000, a bargain and Paul Buff (THe company are the best in the world to deal with (and thats saying something 'cos I used to work for Bowans (another great company, in London)

I also have in my kitchen 2 Velux roof lights that give a nice soft light to work with.
Hope that helps.

Good luck with the book venture.

Great job. Looks good enough to eat. Hey mate. I know why you're here. It's the burgers. I never will forget the first time I had a burger in England - a Wimpy's. Have you ever had one of those or are you too young?

You know, what I don't get is how good these things look in these pics and then when you go get 'em they look like someone has been sitting on them for an hour or so and they look nothing like these. What's up with that?

My kitchen has a Lollypop shaped bench that is directly under a velux roof light and the secret to making them look fresh is to brush the stuff with Clycerine.

I hear motor oil makes great Maple syrup for pancake shots, just don't try to eat them afterwards. Have been studying Food Styling lately and its amazing what "tricks" can be used to simulate the real thing....probably why we don't get what we're seeing when we order the real thing..

Not everyone uses the tricks.....but can do some interesting things. Lighting, of course is essential. Wish I had room at home for a small studio.......

Thank God I ate breakfast this morning!...Food is one thing I have only photographed once. The lighting in my kitchen is sorely lacking...however I did take a picture of my deer stew served outside. I keep going back to the top picture. It's true you really eat with your eyes.
