B&H has the Nikon D-610 for $1696.95 (reg. $1996.95), I am thinking of biting the bullet and buying one. It will be a transition from my Nikon D-50 to the Nikon D-610 but that's OK. I have many Photographer friends that have recent cameras I have used. In fact that's why I still use my D-50. On trips I have always been able to borrow a more up to date camera from a friend including Full Frames. Never aspired to be a pro. Just take good pictures. I think now is the time to upgrade.

The 610 has great reviews, I am sure you will enjoy it, it will be a big change till you get used to it, but you will have some quality photos to enjoy.

Congratulations, you picked a winner. I had the 600 and Nikon replaced it due to the oil spot problem with the 610. It is, as you probably already know, an excellent choice and you will be very happy with your decision. ;)

I don't think it will be such a big change, the basic controls are really quite similar. The biggest difference seems to be that the D610 has a "sub-command dial" in addition to the main command dial, while the D50 only has one dial.

I bought my D610 at the end of August after many years with Nikon SLR's and 6 years with my D80. I found the move up to be almost seamless as the controls are nearly the same. I think you will not regret the change, and will still use your D50 as a backup as I do with my D80.

Don't forget you should have to buy new glass to really enjoy the full benefit of your your hard earned dollars on a full frame camera.

I think the upgrade will serve you well. In fact, I have just done the same thing, purchasing a refurbished D610 from Nikon USA, due for delivery tomorrow. For me, I had to work within a budget, and while I had planned to wait until spring, a sale they had this past weekend was too good to pass up. Now I must start saving for some new glass.

I feel the same way. The deal was too good to pass up. My 610 will be here on Friday. I want to tell you guys something however. The D-50 was and is an Amazing Entry Level Camera from Nikon. A little "Long in the Tooth" but those teeth still shine Pearly White. New comers to DSLR's that want to buy used should always be given the D-50 option! When Rockwell advises putting D-50's on ice for a D-40 he is nuts. Most often I agree with him but not in this case. The body motor alone makes the D-50 a more valuable camera than the D-40 !!! Will post some 610 pictures soon !!!!!

I had a D-50 as well and earlier this year passed it on to my daughter. She loves the camera. I upgraded originally to a D7000 and now have decided to move into full frame. Since I am not interested in video shooting, my interests (and budget) align with the D610. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

As much as I love my D7100, if I knew that the D610 would be priced at $1696.95, I'd jump at it!
When I went for the D7100, I wasn't familiar with crop sensors vs. full frame.
I will continue to enjoy my D7100, but a Dxxx is on my bucket list somewhere down the road.

Can't wait to see your pics with the D610. Congrats on the purchase!
Do you have glass for it already, or did you buy a new lens, too?

If you have no Canon or Nikon gear, the D810 would be the right camera to compare the 5D Mark III with, and that is a very interesting competition. If you have either Canon or Nikon equipment like full frame lenses or flashes, then sticking with the same brand is a convenient tiebreaker.
