Sorry to jump ship from Nikon to Canon, I have had my Nikon D5300 with 9 Lens and everything I could get, and this weekend I saw the pictures of the SX50 and I got one and I am so happy one camera and just one Lens. :) :) :)

Enjoy it Stephen. It gets better and better as one learns it's drawbacks and capabilities. 8-)

It will be the most photographic fun you have ever had with such a small investment.

Takes a little bit to get used to tho...

If you need any input or advice, there are lots and lots of previous topics on UHH :)

Here are some suggested settings:

When using HQ burst mode for birds:
AF-Point Zoom on
AF-assist beam on
IS settings - continuous
display area small

For priority modes and P, I use:
AF frame flexizone
servo AF off
continuous AF on
spot AE point center

Note the shortcut button on back; I use to toggle among raw, raw+jpg, jpg only.

Aperture priority is kind of a waste of time since the SX50 is very hard to achieve out of focus backgrounds at wider angles. See:
http://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-251193-1.html

There is a seek-assist button on front, left side. Zoom to your subject, then if you lose it, push that re-acquire button. While hold the button down, the lens will go to wide angle, allowing you more view to see where you want to be. When you release the button, the lens zooms back to where you had it.

Some folks have good results with the digital zoom and/or the in-camera teleconverter (1.5x, 2x). Others, like me, have gone to optical zoom only, and cropping if need :)

I use the digital zoom often as it allows to me see in detail things that I might not recognize otherwise. It is like having a powerful telescope. Even when I shoot the shot and do some digital editing I can still get a very usable picture. Enjoy

You will enjoy that 'freedom' Stephen. I know I do! It's a terrific camera. Enjoy!

It will be the most fun you have that doesn't involve a partner

Someone posted information about the SX50 being a close out at Target and Walmart today. I was in Target 2 or : days ago and the clearance tag said $300. The OP said it was down to $200 so I went back a couple of hours ago. All Target had was the floor model @ $215. Since it was the FM he gave me another 10%. Then I noticed it didn't have the lens cap. Off went another 5%.
Then he offered me 2 yrs extended warranty for $21. So, with 15% off, insurance and tax, I got it for $221.
Not a bad deal.

Thanks. It was definitely a good price.
I didn't mean to step on the OP's original post. I thought someone would lead me to the first post I saw today.

I went walking up Inspiration Peak with my SX50HS.
I've had mine a year and a half now.
I shut off all the smile, face recognition, and baby stuff. I don't have a lot of people I take pics of.. I'm mostly landscapes, flowers, sunup and sundown.. a moon every once in a while.

This last moon was the eclipse and it was just a little too dark for the optical settings instead of digital. The pics look ok on the monitor but are just a little dark when printed out.

OK.. this is what I got up on the 'hill'... no processing yet.

That was me... & why its marked down to $300.00 at the target store in your market area is a mystery to me?, cause they want to get rid of the SX 50's ''Fast & Furious'' at target, they do that with all discontinued cameras, mainly around the holiday season.

No, no. That was a few days ago, maybe Tuesday. When I saw your post, I decided to go back and check it out. The red clearance sticker, which was on top of another red clearance sticker (probably the $300 one) said $214.99...so I grabbed it!

Thanks for putting me on to it.
