You've all noticed those little ad boxes that appear within the UHH daily digest emails. I'm curious as to why they seem to be geared to me. For instance, some will be from websites I've visited recently and others are from websites that are connected with the work I do. Who is controlling this? Does anybody know?

It's the same way here. I think it's because we have cookies that they place on our hard-drives that the other companies can read. If I was to search for "pool stick" for example, I would have cookies placed on my hard-drive and other web-sites know I searched for "pool sticks". I'm no computer guy by a long shot, but I think it works something like that.

It's the same for Facebook. If I search for something at Amazon and then go to facebook, there will be an amazon add for the same product on my wall.

This universe that we all inhabit is a virtual construct of your mind... everything in it is specially geared to you.
or, websites may look at your cookies (not sexual) to see where you've been... targeted advertising.
Ad Blocker and Ad Blocker Plus work well for me. (Free)
Just watched this Docu it explains how and why this happens. Very interesting indeed

Cookies and adware placed on your computer by websites trigger directed advertising. It can be pretty funny if you go with the flow. I have seen a number of UHH pages that have titles with the word "shoot" or "shooting" frequently display ads for Glock pistols! It works pretty well for a lot of advertisers - a UHH page on a new Tamron telephoto will often have an ad for Tamron lenses at the top of the page. That is one way that operators of websites like this financially support their operation.

Why do you think UHH and countless other sites are free to the user? If they couldn't give targeted adverts, then they couldn't afford to run the site. As others have said, it is all to do with both the key words on the web page and your cookies.
I don't mind the targeted advertising, which only come up with the appropriate page, as it gives me the free site. The things I strongly object to are the worm-type adware programs which infect the computer and can be very hard to kill.

Install ADBLOCK and they will disappear, it is a free program, and all the author asks is for a donation I sent them $10 best $10 I ever spent

AdBots. They read the page and insert the appropriate ad.
