Female Common Eastern Carpenter Bee

Several of these bumble bees are presently visiting my butterfly bush. Quite the disconcerting buzz when you get in close.

Based on the green eyes and the characteristic black "bald spot" on thorax, this is most likely a female Common Eastern Carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eastern_carpenter_bee

Image looks a bit back-focused, just behind (below) the eyes.

You are absolutely correct, Douglass. They like to drill into my house! And they make perfectly round holes too. Natures drill bit. Judging by their name I would wish them back to Virginia. :wink:
Thanks for the link. It was the green eyes that made me pull out the camera to begin with.
