Also, do you want to only consider optical viewfinders or are you willing to consider electronic viewfinders? The Olympus XZ-2 with the VF-4 would give you a 35mm equivalent of 12Mpx with a 25mm/100mm f1.8/f2.5 lens camera with a 2.4 million dot viewfinder with a refresh rate of 120 time a second. Olympus has a sale on for the XZ-2 for $299 until the 10/04. The VF-4 will cost about $280. The Olympus Stylus 1 has 35mm equivalent of 12Mpx with a 28mm/300mm lens with a constant f2.8 and an electronic viewfinder of 1.4 million dots. It is on sale for $650 until 10/04.

Well, how small is the question? and you are quite right to want a viewfinder.
Have a look at the Olympus Stylus 1, it is a tremendous specification and worthy of your consideration.

A logical upgrade would be the Canon SX50 (prices going down because of the advent of the SX60), or for a few dollars more, the SX60 itself. They both have an EVF (electronic view finder).

Consider the Sony HX400. 50x zoom, f/2.8 Carl Zeiss lens, 20mp sensor. Almost a DSLR in a bridge body. B&H has them for $448.00 and free expedited shipping.

Small is a relative term. Since you're replacing a Canon S95 I assume that you want something similar in size. I agree that a viewfinder is a good idea.

Some for $500 or less worth considering include the Nikon P7800, Canon G15 and 16, Fujifilm X20 and X30, and Panasonic LF-1 and ZS40.

I have both a P7800 and LF-1 and I like them both. Both have a 28-200 lens, a 1/1.7 inch sensor, and an EVF (electronic viewfinder). The P7800 lens is f/2-4 while the LF-1 lens is f/2-5.9. The P7800 has a hot shoe, but it's bigger than the LF-1. It requires a big pocket where the LF-1 can fit in a shirt or most pants pockets. The P7800 runs around $550 but it's available refurbished for under $400 from Nikon USA. You might be able to find one used for refurbished from keh.com, B&H, or Adorama. The LF-1 costs around $300 new.

I like an EVF in a compact because it shows exposure and other data that a optical VF does show in a compact. I like a hot shoe so you can add a small flash. I have a tiny Nikon SB-300 flash that I can use for bounce flash to produce a nicer more natural light than direct flash.

The Canon A1400 is just about the same size as your S95, has an optical viewfinder, and is quite affordable. I have one and use it regularly.
