Hi, I am new to this group and very impressed with the depth of knowledge here. I am wanting to buy a new camera to replace my trusty old D70 and have been reading a lot to determine what to buy. I have read a lot of complaints about Nikon's so called lack of quality control, particularly the D7000 and even some on the D7100 (both serious candidates). Is this truly an issue now or is this some isolated complaints? A lot of which seem to involve lack of timely response/service. I'm getting to old to "waste" what time I have to get stuck with a camera that I can't use for six months or a year. Is this something to worry about? Secondly do the popular camera sources handle these problems or do I have to work with Nikon service?? Thanks in advance for your advice.

I'm not sure what you referring to. I owned a Nikon D7000 and never had a problem with it and never heard of problems with it. Likewise I've not heard of problems with D7100. There were major problems with the Nikon D600 shutter, but I bought a D600 refurbished and have not had any problems with it. I have heard of problems with the D810 when that camera was first released, but none since. Are you sure Nikon is having the problems you imagine?

Welcome to the Hog. Lots of smart guys here--most, if not all, smarter than me. You'll get many opinions and observations some of which even address your questions. Here are my thoughts.

I moved up from a D90 to D7100 about 6 months ago, so my experience is not lengthy. That disclaimer in place, I've had zero problems. None. The D7100 has a great reputation as the best APS-C camera for stills--video is a different subject that I can't address. It's just what I want and need for the kind of shooting I do which is primarily nature, landscapes and general photography. No portraits/studio work or action like sports. Although I wish there was a larger selection of fast DX lenses, I can work around that. I have no intention of changing.

As for service, if you buy it new, I think you'll end up dealing with Nikon. MAKE SURE YOU DON'T BUY GREY MARKET. As for time lost, I send one lens off to the Nikon Service Center in Melville NY for a repair estimate--I got the estimate in about 4 days and when I said "no thanks," they send the lens back post haste. I think it was gone a total of 10 days or less.

Bottom line--I'd buy a D7100 again in a heartbeat. Mine was a refurb, as was my D90, from Roberts and I'll buy refurb again without hesitation. Go for it.

I am only referring to what I have read in "reviews" of the cameras. They may or may not be accurate. The source of my concerns. Thanks

I absolutely agree with the previous two gentlemen.

I bought my D7100 refurbished from Cameta Camera in July of last year. It has been well used - the evidence is on these pages - and I have not had any problems, nor have I heard of others having problems.

I love the camera, it's used for stills and video. I would suggest that if you buy one, you too will love it and have no regrets.

Not sure where you saw these reviews, but many on here, including myself, have either the D7000 or 7100. Both great camera's and you won't be disappointed with either.
Welcome to the hog!

I'll add my voice to the D7100 fan crowd! I bought mine new (from Ace Photo) earlier this year, and have been absolutely stunned by the quality, durability, flexibility and adaptability of this camera. I've had ZERO problems, and the longer I use it, the better I become at being a photographer!

Thanks to all who answered. My concerns are probably unnecessary.

The D7100 has been one of the DX (ASP-C) cameras ever produced by anyone.
Your information is bogus.

Sooner, welcome to the Hog.
Yes, I've read many here complain about Nikon's customer service. There is probably some truth to the customer service end of it.
Don't think I've ever heard anyone complain about the 7100 though, as it seems to be quite reliable.
Personally, I've never had ANY problems with Nikon customer service.
But that might have more to do with the fact that I use a CANON!!
Sooner, you'll find out sooner or later. Good luck Sooner. ;-)

Scanning any photo forum will yield many complaints about every camera company and every camera model. The people who are perfectly happy with their camera and camera company are out taking pictures. Consider that everyone who has a problem complains and only .05% of people who are happy trumpet about it.

Quite true.

Years ago, when I was working my way through college, I heard a saying I've never forgotten:

For my two cents Sooner. I bought a refurbed D7100 from Cameta Camera and it arrived last Tuesday. Out the door with a 1 year warranty for a grand total of $890.00 and it is a terrific piece of engineering from what I've been able to tell thus far.

As juicesqueezer mentioned, it is highly unlikely that you would be disappointed with either the D7000 or D7100 but if you can wait a month or so, the prices on both may drop more if Nikon releases the D7200.

I only shoot a D3300, and very limited experiance. (Only a few thousand pictures so far.)
Not a moment of any sort of trouble so far.
Read through your replies and pay particular attention to whom sez Nikon's are prone to problems.
Such rumors often emanate from the other guys camp.
Just sayin...

0Hi Sooner and welcome to the Hogg. I have a D600 Nikon that has been back to Nikon twice to fix shutter issues. That said, the machine takes great photos and the build quality is solid.
Have you ever bought a new car and had to take it in for warranty service, improvements or recalls. Things happen in life.
You have to respect a manufacturer that cares enough to fix the occasional ooops to improve their product for their customers.
These are complex machines. Things happen. Don't pay attention to the political bashing. I started with the D3100 and have since moved up to the D600. I'm extremely happy with the performance of them all.
Get a Nikon and you will be part of a great consortium of Nikon shooters here. Good Luck.
