Usually that term refers to a 50mm F1:1.4 lens. On your crop sensor body(as well as my D80) it is a very fast 80mm equivalent lens. I use mine as a portrait lens because the large aperture allows for a very shallow depth of field.

I have a 50mm f1.4 and had the LAW laid down about the fact that it was not a 'nifty fifty'. Ha ha. I alway thought I had one and was told in no uncertain terms that I could call my 50mm f1.4 anything I wanted, but NOT a nifty fifty. I learn soooo much on the UHH forum. If you use the 'search' button at the top, maybe you can bring up the 'nifty fifty' post. Fun reading. :D

No thanks. My 50f1.4 is an old Nikkor Ais model and it may not be called a "nifty fifty" by some. I won't argue about terminology, because it still makes incredible portraits with my D80.

I encourage you to look up the old 'nifty fifty' post. Lots of entertainment.
I bet your old f1.4 has some weight to it.

It would be 75mm equiv field of view, not 80mm, just fyi.

It's a 50mm prime lens. Argue over 1.4 vs 1.8 but it's just a 50mm prime.

To a Canon APS-C user, it is closer to 80mm equivalent FOV because their sensor is slightly smaller than Nikon.

True, but the guy who said 80 said he had a d80 ;)

The idea is that it is a fairly fast (f/1.8), fairly cheap (about $200 or less) "normal" lens. The "normal" part either comes from the field of view matching our eyes or from the focal length being about the same as the diameter of the image circle.

With your camera, the "nifty-fifty" is really the Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX ($200).
