Haha, so you named the photo after my impression of them; GREAT! They rush just as much in SoCal and, indeed, they are skittish.

To me the crop rewards with a feeling of the running surface, shape and colour of the bird and a nice interplay of white on top against similar reversed form of the dark foreground faintly broken with reflection. What do you think?

Much better, wanted the feeling of the SP striding. Lighter image reveals his footprints. Knew I had a good image but it needed some tweaking. Thanks to all

Thanks for the compliment. Happy with the composition. Underside of SP a little blown out

I know we should be dealing with the picture as taken but in the future try to get as low as possible to be more on the level with the bird. That would eliminate the broad expanse of water and perhaps highlight the bird with the breaking surf behind him. If possible, keep the light behind you. Shots taken when the sun is low can be particularly appealing. Be aware that the high reflectance of the water can give autofocus some problems.

Pirdpix, Was on my knees. Have used the articulated lcd. Difficult in bright sun. Next time will bring a tarp or each blanket so I can get lower. Thanks

one thing I have learned with birds it use manual focus, and look at its eye for the most part. it made a world of difference for me. Takes some getting use to but I find that my pictures are just a little sharper out of the camera.

On another note, I like to push tie F stop some. It seams thet some of my better bird shots are with high F stops, from F8 and UP, that is when I get more detail.

Nice shots and I like the first one the best. :)
