What could I have done to minimize the glare off of the rims on this shot?
Check out the Scrim Jim from F.J. Westcott Co. It's a portable scrim used by videographers and pro photographers to diffuse the sun.
Alternatively, you could build some large panels with CPVC pipe and cover them with Rosco Soft Frost material. Having an assistant or two or three hold them between sun and subject would diffuse the light quite nicely, enlarging the size of the specular highlights.

Nice comp, btw. The comment about angle of light source incidence is correct. I shoot a lot of cars (many of them pearl based paints and high chrome which make a nightmare in hard light). I would have shot it later in the morning to mid afternoon, with the sun higher and shadows are shorter. One other suggestion is to use the shadows to your benefit and mask the shiny bits. There have been times, I've use an off-axis flash to get rid of some of the "glare". The only other thing I can suggest is to under expose 1/2 to a full stop and remask portions to compress the highlights while raising the mids. In some ways you have to think of it more like a manual HDR construction of the shot.
Hope that helps.

Great images, ppenrod. Thank you.

I also love auto shows, but the sun drives me crazy too! And also when the owners all have the hoods up.... I adjusted this a little, very basically, using an application called Smart Photo Editor. It is easy to use and everything you need to fix photos is included, often on sale for 29.95. It is a computer app, not for phones or tablets. As someone else said, invest in a polarizing filter too.
