Here are more Lunar photos... Taken with an old Dynamax 8 telescope.

I have an old Dynamax 8" that had a spotty reputation by some. Mine was in great shape until I had it in the trunk of my car and hit a huge pot hole several years ago. I had to take it apart to fix it but I think that I put the corrector lens back on a tad out of line. It still works but I lost the crystal clear images that I use to get. I thought about sending it off to have it fixed then I thought why spend the money on such an old scope. I can just spend that money on a new scope! :D

General photo Info:
Dynamax 8 telescope - f/10
Canon 40D w/LiveView focus
ISO from 100-800
1/30th - 1/60th second exposures
Remote cable release
Best of 3 sequence photos of each (to take into account for any wind vibrations)

That's SICK!!!!!!!!!

LOL! Dang, looks like you just about reach out and touch it. Nice photos! Did you have to do much cropping and blowing them up, or is this the way they came out?

They are at 100% (+/-)... I have some earlier moon photos that I took that had some cropping (200%) that looked pretty good. None of these had that much cropping. I tried some different ISO ratings this time and had too much grain if you used any cropping. I have had several post regarding my moon shots. Just check my moon postings... also have photos of my scope.

You are so right! Can save trillions of tax-payers dollars. The risk is minimal at worse. Just have to watch out for falling tree limbs! I have a limited view of the sky from my rear yard. Too many trees! In fact I just came in for a few... shooting more photos of the moon but the wind is playing havoc on my scope.... looks like one of those Hollowood movies during an earthquake! Windy conditions makes fuzzy pics! My neighbors are turning on their lights trying to see what the lunatic is doing in the rear yard with that funny contraption! Darn lights reduce the contrast on my pics!!! Well back at it! Will be back on later tonight if a tree limb doesn't get me!!!

Hope my comment wasn't misunderstood Ian. I belong to several photo forums and one of them a lot of the posters uses "That's Sick" When they're bragging about the photos!

They are VERY good! A couple of them I felt like I was getting ready to touch down on the surface. :)

Thanks for the comments on the moon photos. I really enjoy taking these photographs. It is really challenging and I am slowly developing my photographic techniques/methods in lunar photography. I have limited resourses and have been coming up with work-arounds to make improvements to my astrophotography techniques. Blah, blah, blah, blah... :)

Thanks... Yes I rotated the photo of the moon for appearance... most people don't notice it. I do a lot of photos that way. Just a quirk of mine. :)...

It looks like youre getting great results...being a telescope owner I would say send the scope in for the repair you think it needs...8" scopes are expensive to replace...

Repair shops will generally give you estimates over the phone if you are sure what your problem is.

Plus you will avoid the dreaded "I want a new telescope" bug...which causes sleepless nites...hives...and general crankiness.

After you did the repair...did you collimate the scope???...its a fairly simple procedure...google it for techinques

I have thought about getting that laser collimator that can be used for SCT or Newtonian scopes. But I am interested in the current computerized scopes. My Dynamax just has a standard clock-drive! I was thinking about my scope being 30 years old. The primary and secondary mirrors probably need to be re-silvered and reflective coating added. My Dynamax is a good scope but it is odd-ball sized. I thought that the rear cell was a standard 2" diameter 26 TPI… it turns out that it is about 1-29/32" 26TPI! I discovered this after ordering a 2" 26TPI focal reducer/enhancer lens. It didn't fit when I tried to install it! I had read a section on the internet saying that the Celestron and Meade focal reducers would fit on the Dynamax… WRONG!!! With all of the issues with the Dynamax, I have been thinking about getting a new scope… maybe a 12" or 14" SCT! A 12" SCT would be more manageable but the 14" would be fantastic. The only problem that I have is too many trees in my yard to make a scope of that size 100% usable… not to mention the neighboring light pollution!

Unless you are willing to keep a 12" to 14" outside all the time...and you can... I have a 11"celestron...with a gizmow cover that I keep out 24/365.

you are hooked and I am afraid there is no cure....

try taking a handfull of aspirin...any questions dont hesitate to ask
