I always have the day off I'm retired. An usually am up til 3 or 4 AM. But I'm up at the crack of noon everyday. I'm just learning Gimp cause I'm too cheap to buy photoshop. But this winter when I get all that indoor time I'll start learning how to work on things like this. But for now I just shoot and enhance with PMB the program that came with my Sony A-55

I see. That would make my remarks a little different. Judging by your profile pic, you appear too young for that terrible state you seem to find yourself in - retirement. If you are that young, then you must've done something right. Congratulations! It is indeed to stay up late and sleep in, eh? I don't mind it at all. Good luck with Gimp. I really don't have the patience for either that or PS. Maybe when I get where I can't move around any longer, say around 85 or so. :-) Enjoy your day.

gessman,

Sorry. I was responding to the woman who said she had just taken a new pain pill and it was starting to kick in. She was probably kidding and I sure am. How do you get these responses to go to the right place? I responded directly to her input. When I see where my responses end up sometimes, it makes me sound like a moron. Of course, some people may think I am anyway.

*blush*
It wasn't Vicodin (can't take narcotics) but I wasn't kiddin' either, so ya broke even. :) I have a very low threshold when it comes to medication... hate the stuff lol

In regards to how to truncate the messages (and hoping this hasn't been addressed already, pardon if so?):

When you hit "Quote Reply" it will provide the direct quote you're responding to.

To truncate specifically to one part of a message or one specific person (if more than one are listed as with some of these really LONG posts that show what ___ said in response to ____ who said_____ in response to _____, well you get it *blush*)...

Find where you see [ "Quote=" the person you want to respond to specifically ] at the top left of the response (reply) window. Follow the comment you want to respond to until you see [ /quote ] .

Everything that falls beyond those boundaries, you want to highlight and cut out.

You should be left with something that looks like:
[ Quote=____ ] body of comments that you want to respond to [ /quote ]

Once you've done that THEN, come in under that part and type your comment and hit send.

Viola'!
If done right, your comment comes under the specific relevant content you wanted to respond to!

(Now watch ... I broke that down and probably messed up myself! lol)

Hope that helps and that my offering isn't a repeat post.

And I REALLY hope Gessman isn't offended by my offering this in his post instead of in PM. I wasn't thinking.
Apologies.

I dunno. You taught me to stay off center a little but in this case, I think your flower ( pistol ) is touching too close to the left. It needs a tad bit more room. What do you think? Excellent photos anyway.

Thanks. You said, "what do you think?" No offense but it appears to me as thought you didn't get in on the first of this thread but are responding to someone else's comments and a picture they may have put up after "fixing" mine. If I'm wrong about that then please forgive me. But here was my original question - "Which is better, my #1 pic which is the unaltered original, or #2 which is that same shot cropped, or #3 which is with no cropping but turned 90 degrees up, or #4 which is #2 turned up 90 degrees. All the same picture just 2 uncropped, 2 cropped the same, and 2 turned up instead of to the left.

Thanks. Comment #1, that's how it was.

Comment #2, way too complex for me this a.m., er, uh, p.m.

Thanks. My aim was the reproductive instruments of the lily and the pedals were merely a backdrop, supporting cast, as it were, not the subject. I felt I had gotten enough of what I saw as the backdrop to imply and attest to the fact that this was a lily.

Honest opinion: nice but cropped a bit too tightly. Perhaps re-crop using the rule of thirds and see if this changes your image.

Cheers,
jb

I love taking pictures of lilies. I love the black background also. Great job. I have some day lilies that I actually laid on the ground and shot up towards the sky...blue background, and the sun shining through the leaves. just something different. Here's a link to it, BUT now that I look at it I could have cropped better. It was taken a couple years ago. http://www.flickr.com/photos/va1940/2565321305/in/set-72157604127649593

Super lovely, excellent job, all of them. You have an eye and excellent technique. Thanks for pointing us there. I enjoyed immensely.

Thanks Gessman. I'm new to this list and don't want to be too 'noisy'

Shucks, you shouldn't let that bother you. I don't, as I'm sure you've noticed and I'm normally a pretty quiet guy if you can believe it. Well, quiet anyway.

Thanks. I value that. So far #1 has the most votes.

I will toss my perception in. I like #4 best: In all four I feel a visual pull into the center of the flower. With it vertical, I feels more natural to "fall" into the flower and with less black negative space the pull is stronger. (maybe I was an insect in a previous life). If the anthers were contrasted better with the background then my eyes would be more strongly drawn to them upon first seeing the photo and then drawn into the flower and back again. With this contrast I still am first drawn to the anthers and down into the flower but struggle to return to the anthers.

Which one do you like best?
