I have been waiting for the confluence of a gorgeous day and low tide so that I could take my new Canon 10-22 wide-angle lens and make the 50-mile trip to Campobello Island, New Brunswick, just across the bridge (and border) from Lubec, Maine. When the tide is low you can walk across a sandbar to its' iconic East Quoddy Head Lighthouse. While you can get good photos of it with a telephoto, I thought this lens would enable some nice photography. And yesterday I found that with a donation to their restoration fund I could climb up in the tower! Here's a few from yesterday:

Have you seen the Tides at the Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick. The largest tides in the world.

Campobello Island - and Lubec, Maine - are at the mouth of the Bay of Fundy. The tides here can be a measly 28 feet! Not the 50 feet further up in New Brunswick. I parked my car on a gravel beach onetime to go kayaking, and as I was paddling out and looked back at my car it dawned on me.... if I was gone for about six hours I would not be finding my car when I returned - I would be paddling over it!
The sandbar going over to the East Quoddy Head Light is only dry for a few hours at low tide, and HUGE warning signs advise people not to try to cross even if the water is only a few inches deep, because it moves across the sandbar at great speed as the tide changes. Every few years someone tries to prove Darwin was correct... if they are lucky a passing lobster boat spots them and pulls them in, but the water is very cold and survival is measured in minutes...

Worth a trip - Moncton has a huge and famous tidal bore. In several locations in downeast Maine there are "reversing falls" which are rapids created in narrow spots that go back and forth as the tide changes.
GREAT pictures! Did you use a lens hood?

Yes - the small one that comes with the lens.
Canon 10-22mm is an excellent piece of glass. I've used it for many years. It's proven in low light situations also. I was going to sell mine,,,,,,,,but,,,,,,,,,I just couldn't part with it. I have since moved up to full frame cam but keep my apc-crop (7D & 7DII) just to to accommodate this wonderful lense.
Wonderful photos with your Canon 10-22mm wide angle lens. Thanks for directing me to them.
Terrific set of photos Steve. I use that same lens on my 7D, and like it very much. It never disappoints.
A friend of mine who died, went all over New England and took pictures of lighthouses. His widow (my friend also) gave me an envelope of prints from his pictures and I have been oil painting lighthouses from the prints. I don't have them on my website yet, but I was very, very grateful.
