Tonight at about 5:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, the earth will be hit with a solar storm. This will probably produce some spectacular lights at the two poles. I don't think I'm far enough north to see them but if you are you may want to be out there with your camera. Then for the rest of us, please, please post your pictures.

Our news here in Oklahoma is saying that we could actually see some of the northern lights caused by the storm.
I'd better be ready. Last time they were visible here, they only lasted about ten minutes. By the time I found out, they were gone. :(
Heavy clouds here or I would be out for sure!!!
Nothing has been happening here.

Hope it does not shut down viewing the Giants/ 49'ers game. I was a Giants fan years ago when I lived in N.Y. State. Now that we are on the west coast we follow the 49'ers. Go Niners!
You won't see anything if this wind keeps blowing.

Yeah didn't see anything last night cause of cloud cover and now the wind is crazy. Probably won't see anything but it is nice to hope.

You can go to SPACE.com and get information. I think there's also an app, for a monthly subscription fee, that will alert you of these events on your cell phone.

Wow! Talk about coincidences...I just got this email from Space.com a minute ago:
Space Weather News for Jan. 22, 2011
http://spaceweather.comGEOMAGNETIC ACTIVITY: Earth's magnetic field is reverberating from a CME*** impact during the early hours of Jan. 22nd. The hit compressed Earth's magnetic field, briefly exposing some geosynchronous satellites to solar wind plasma, and disturbed the ionization structure of Earth's upper atmosphere. As night falls on Jan. 22nd, Arctic sky watchers are reporting bright auroras in response to a polar geomagnetic storm (Kp=5). Please check
http://spaceweather.com for images and updates.
***CME is a Coronal Mass Ejection

I notice, in my message, that they put 2011 as the date. Not to worry...it's current. They just messed up.

Another one coming in tomorrow...
(This time they corrected the date to 2012)
Yesterday I mentioned the site as Space.com. It's spaceweather.com. However, they usually give similar information.

Space Weather News for Jan. 23, 2012
http://spaceweather.comINCOMING CME: Big sunspot 1402 erupted on Jan. 23rd, producing a strong M9-class solar flare and a fast-moving coronal mass ejection (CME). Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab say the CME should reach Earth on Jan. 24th at 14:18 UT (+/- 7 hr) and Mars a little more than a day later. Strong geomagnetic storms are possible when the cloud reaches Earth. Our magnetic field is still reverberating from a CME impact on Jan. 22nd, so another blow could spark impressive auroras at high latitudes. Sky watchers in northern Europe, Canada, Alaska, and northern-tier US states such as the Dakotas, Minnesota and Wisconsin should be alert for Northern Lights.

Here's another tidbit from Space.com.
Venus will transit the sun on June 6th this year. Next chance won't be until 2017.
The last time I tried to photograph this I was using a P7S, handheld. Got nothing.
I'm going to research this and see what I have to do.
