Not a DSLR but I love my GoPro for underwater pictures and video. Only problem is no viewfinder or screen but wide enough to get the picture. Make sure you get the red filter.

May seem a silly question, but film or digital?

If film, look on ebay for a good used Nikonos. They can be had for a song, sometimes complete with flash, meters and accessory lens.

Can't help with digital :(

Nikon makes one that's waterproof up to 59', I think it's called the AW120.

Will you be snorkeling or diving? The depth matters. What is your budget, in dollars, weight, and bulk? What is your general image quality goal?

Some have mentioned the Olympus TG-3 and Nikon 1 AW1 in an adjacent topic, "rugged, water proof cameras".

I have an older model, the Nikon AW100. No complaints.

Oh yeah :) and the Nikonos is a great camera. Back in the early to mid 70s it was all I had and used it successfully below and above the surface. Even won a couple of awards for B&W landscapes with it (and my great darkroom skills of course :) )

Thanks for all the replies. This was the first time I posted a question, with a great amount of hesitation I might add. I have observed other questions and replies on this site for two years. It never fails that the questioner is put through the ringer with questions to his questions. A simple answer to the question is all I wanted. Name and model of camera would have been fine. No more questions from me!!!

Being asked questions in response isn't to put you through the ringer, it is to help you get the most appropriate answer for your need. With many questions, especially the "what camera should I get" variety, it is easy to give a quick answer, but it may result in an inappropriate choice.

Exactly. Personally I think his reply was a bit ungrateful for the advice he received. Not a single response was inappropriate.

Read following Review:

I have played with all mentioned and agree that the Olympus TG-3 is the most pleasurable to use and easiest to handle and shoot under water

The Nikon AW series after the original AW100 is very good for a weather proof camera. (Let me state that) It is a very good all around point and shoot camera and really is water proof to about 59 feet. (Just to be clear about my statement about the AW100) With the AW100 (Nikon's first weather proof camera) there were some, not all that developed seal leaks early during the warranty period. Nikon repaired or replaced those cameras and then came out with a newer model that did not have the problems. I have seen some amazing underwater photos from the AW series and can assure you that (since I am now living Clearwater Fl) it is high on my list for swimming and scuba diving. It beats the heck out of buying a $1500 water proof case to carry my D7100 camera into the depths and hope the case holds. I don't know if Canon and some of the others make a similar camera, but I do know this one is good.
