I have been in the background for a few months now, just following the posts. Haven't seen or read anything about Canon 400 DO lens. Can someone give me feedback? Pros and cons?

I had a customer wanting to trade one in on a 500mm F4 awhile back. It was surprisingly light for a 400mm F4 lens. IS is slow and obviously an early version. AF was pretty good although it searched a lot on a 7D, was better on a 6D. IQ was comparable to the 400mm F5.6, and better than the 100-400mm zoom. We did not make a deal because he wanted way too much for it. At $6500 its quite a bit over-priced in my opinion, but for a hand-held 400mm it is easier to pack around than the F5.6 model. You REALLY have to want a 400 prime to cough up the bucks for what it offers in my opinion.
Oh, and he did buy my 500mm F4 prime anyway.

I own the 400mm f5.6 lens and am happy with it. IMO, the DO is way over priced. I have run into a couple of people that own one and neither were thrilled with it.

With what they want for that lens I would be looking at the Sigma 500m f4.5 lens first.

Good morning and welcome to the forum. The Pro's: light weight, smaller and cheaper. The Cons: not the same glass as in the 400mm f/2.8 so not the quality either. Why don't you go to B&H Photo and look up that lens and read the reviews. Read with an open mind and look at the reports with the fewest stars and see if there is a pattern. Don't believe all you will read because some people will say it's the best ever when in fact it may not be. On the left look to see if they are a professional or an amateur doing the review. Don't disreguard the amateur as all that means is he/she isn't being paid. For this kind of money I'd rent one and see if it fit your needs prior to buying!

I have studied this lens extensively without actually having one - but here is my take .......Optically, it is a tick better than the 400 5.6 - on crop frame - the corners are slightly weaker on full frame. It does have IS. It will get you to 560mm with a 1.4X @5.6 - which means you do NOT need an F8 AF enabled body and still possible to get good backround blur. The contrast seems a tick lower than other Canon super teles - fixable in PP. The ergonomics are good - for what it does and is a major consideration for those who actually have one and want speed and mobility ie handheld or with monopod. The cost is somewhat high - good used ones are about $3800 - or what you could buy a NEW Sigma 120-300 2.8 sports for.

koosh, I own and use the 400mm f/4 DO IS L lens. I also have a 500mm f/4 IS L lens but don't feel comfortable using it after I broke my left wrist. The DO is half the weight of the 500 and that is basically why I bought it. I really have enjoyed using it for wildlife. I recently bought the Tamron 150-600 and I'll see how it stacks up with time. Attached are a few images from the 400 DO. By the way, no cons!!!

Koosh, welcome to the Hog.
I have never used one, but someone in my club uses a DO for travel. I don't know which size it is, but they rave about it.
Look at the reviews on, "the digital picture", he's a VERY good tester, and you can compare them visually against other lenses you may be considering, using his image quality feature.
IMHO, no Canon lens is overpriced, you just simply get what you are buying. Too expensive or overpriced is a personal bias, not a lens IQ feature.
Good luck. ;-)

Thanks for the input. The lens was a gift. Took it to the Galapagos couple of weeks ago. I did like the fact that it did not weigh as much as other primes and/or zooms. Happy with the results (less than 10 ft. away from sealion).

Koosh, that's a great shot. There are very few DO's around, so few people actually have experience with it.
That's quite a gift you got there.
One day I'll get one from CPS to try it first hand. I would love to have one, but it would not be a big priority for me.
Enjoy your DO.
