I was trying to load a profile picture on the "profile site" and I also tried to load some on the "introduce yourself site file/picture attachments"...neither would let me upload any...I'm using photo jpg's

Make sure you're loading JPEGs. Also, comply with the dimensions. There's no problem uploading from a Mac.
